    Default Taped wedge help

I've been working on a W&B wedge with 2 pieces of tape and when I got to Naniwa SS 8K the tape is sticking to the hone. More like grabbing it during the stroke and making the stroke very jerky. At first I just pushed with my other hand to guide the razor down and back, but when the razor grabs it seems that I'm applying unwanted/unintended extra pressure to force it moving down the hone. Next I tried changing the tape which didn't work, so finally I tried adding some liquid dish soap which also didn't work. Anyone else have this issue and if so what should I do?

Just curious, are you using black electrical tape? Is there lots of water on your stones? Have you tried, or are you, moving your stroke with the heel forward, about 30 degrees?

IIRC soap can damage the naniwas so I would get that off of there. Using 3M black electrical tape I never had an issue with the tape grabbing the hone or vice versa. Are you using a lot of pressure or not enough water on the hone ?

I am using black electric tape (I don't know the brand since the writing is in Korean) and plenty of water. Thanks for the heads up on not using soap. After I tried it with no success I washed the hone and lapped it to remove all the soap. Anyway I tried going heel first at a 30 degree angle, but it's still grabbing. Also I'm trying not to use any pressure and it seems that only when the blade catches is there any extra pressure. Thanks for the help so far.

Default sorry for the dumb question

I couldn't find the acronym IIRC in the glossary.

Also - Jimmy - no soap on Nanis! Wow. Thx for the tip. I use light soap in spray mist bottle for all stones. I'll keep some plain water out for the Nani. Thank You!

I've been using a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle on all kinds of stones for years, without (apparent) ill effect. Does anyone have a reference for soap harming synthetics?

If possible, use Scotch Super 33+ by 3m.

I've only used soap on the DMT Plates, that's it, and just a few drops in a cup of water...

    Default electrical tape

I hate the feel of electrical tape on hones --- try one layer of simple cellophane tape over the electrical tape, try to find the "matte finish" tape at the grocery store. If you luck into the right brand (I use Wegmans' tape) it skims over the hone even easier than the spine itself and lasts surprisingly long. One layer of this is very thin, I don't think it can change the geometry of your bevel.

Electricians use Super33 when they actually need insulating tape, and use the cheap stuff for temporarily holding stuff (like bundles of wires) together. There is a significant quality (and price) difference.
