Is his razor now one of those famous Ebay shave ready razors?

Ive never honed a razor in my life and am looking to give my two a quick touch up sharpen in the next few days, from everything i have seen and read on here i was looking a little sideways at that video trying to work out how me managed to make such a hash of what seems to be a simple and delicate task.

I especially enjoyed the amount of force used to strop over the edge of his belt, the only other time i have seen that amount of force used was to try and arm wrestle a grizzlie bear to the floor

I for one will be taking my honing advice from SRP alone

You know to stop when it passes the 3 finger test" Did anybody else notice the ambulance on its way at 2:24? Now you know why!

I am not saying that razor will not shave, i'm sure it will. I think i understand why he says his scissors shave better than a straight razor now though.

/Why did he spend so much time talking about the Japanese hone, but not use it?

    Default In detail...

Forgetting his "3 finger test" his method is not completely wrong. he quite clearly calls what he is doing after the 1000k stone "Stropping" This will in fact leave a trailing edge of metal, which will be broken off by drawing the blade through the soft wood. Is it the correct way to sharpen a razor? define "correct" Will it work? certainly. Would THIS guy ever do it to one of his own razors? (third person speak ) Hells No!

And in all fairness, maybe when he said "we" he was referring to the entirety of the carter cutlery corp. because I am pretty certain Mr. Carter is not personally going to Japan and flying the waterstones back in his luggage.

This movie is very detrimental for the whole straight razor shaving community. If someone new to straights will try to sharpen a straight this way, than he will never achieve a shave ready razor. The majority of knife enthusiasts look at him as a sharpening professional, and they will think that he knows how to hone a razor, but looking at the video he obviously doesn't have a clue about it. Thats not a bad thing, but he shouldn't make a video of it, encouraging others to ruin razors this way. I never understood why people think that if they can sharpen a knife, than they can sharpen anything.

Now I understand why so many razors on ebay are 3/8 at the toe and 5/8 at the heel.
