and now real test:

I have NEVER had a good shave with a razor that failed MY HHT, I have had bad ones with razors that passed it too.

I have never had a great shaving razor that did not pass my HHT.

My razors pass MY HHT with my hair, my wife's hair, my son thin, thin hair. So a properly honed razor will cut any hair.

It is valid as a pre-shave test for personal use, because you generally keep the variables the same, and because you generally use the same hair. It is however a ridiculous test for comparing results between different persons. Making conclusions because someone else achieves HHT-3.14 with razor A and stone B while you only achieve HHT-2.71 is still silly.

FWIW I couldn't get my hair to pass an HHT is my ass was on the line and I had a gun to my head...

My shaves are nice though!

Could be where your taking the hair from. Try from the top instead of the bottom ......

This is my experience too, with my HHT. I have had decent shaves with ones that I couldn't get a proper HHT reading on, but never good or better ones. I do usually perform the test with at least two different hairs (from my head/hairbrush) as sometimes it makes a slight difference. Also in my experience, my HHT only indicates the keenness of the edge to cut a hair, not if the shave will be comfortable.

And indeed, it's a honing marker, not a sharpness test as such. It gives you an indication of where your edge is at as you're honing it. Although if I get a good reading with my own thin hair, plus a comfortable (test-)shave on my relatively dry skin, I wouldn't hesitate to call it 'shave-ready' and would be confident to send it out to other people. It's just that I hardly ever send out razors.

I also believe that if you know your hones and know what you're doing, the HHT can become obsolete, only for nuance or absolute confirmation. Or a parlour trick at razor meets (which is kind of silly, in my opinion).
