Thanked: 2209They are different animals. The Thuringen is a soft stone much like the Escher. The Chinese 12k is a very hard stone that cuts very slowly, 100 laps after the Norton 8k is not unusual. The Chinese 12K will not tolerate an edge that is even slightly rounded but the Thuringen will since you use a slurry with it.
Hope this helps,Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin

how much slurry?
This may be a dumb question, but...
I recently purchased a Thuringen from Tony and have used it on a couple of razors. While I'm very new to honing, I have to say I'm please with the results so far.
My question is how much of a slurry do I need to build when using this or similar stones? Should I go to town and build a thick heavy slurry or will just a few passes suffice? Thanks!

Jordan,
Glad it's working well. I don't go overboard with the slurry on these or on Eschers. I use the little rubbing stone in a series of circular motions, extending off of both sides of the stone and running end to end. Kind of like applying wax to a car. I get a light cloudy paste with maybe 75% coverage. After that I hone away. When done I usually leave the whitish slurry on the stone.
My next order is at the sawyer now and may ship as early as next week with a 3 t0 4 week transit time. I'll still add a week here for lapping and rounding though.

Thanks Tony. So you don't rinse the stone when done? You just let it dry?

Thanked: 17Links to the German sites
The link to the German web site www.toolshop.de has been posted but the others haven't. Would someone please post the links to the other German sites? This is all very interesting!

Here they are:
http://www.manufactum.de/track_flash...Pr.5112.0.html
and:
http://www.mst-mueller.de/index2.html
The second link is not working very well at the moment. This happens more often. After a couple of days you'll find on the left side of the page a menu, I think you have to choose: "Neue Produkte" for the Thuringers.

Thanked: 4Did you get any response from them Rich? I emailed them a little while back as I have seen them mentioned on German forums but never got an answer. Maybe they only deal in larger orders from abroad, if at all? Of course they might just not have understood my broken German or English (although that's unlikely).

They are slow! It took me ages to get an answer. The guys from nassrasur.com usually ring the company and manage to get Herr Mueller on the phone. Let me know if I can be of any help.
