Thanked: 0Thuringen stones
I noticed a few posts about Tony Miller selling Thuringen stones, as an alternative to Belgian Coticules.
I've just bought one from Germany, as they were much much cheaper than Belgian coticules - $30 including shipping to UK for 200mm x 50mm as opposed to $80 for a 100mm x 30mm Coticule.
Has anyone tried the Thuringen stones yet?, and how do they rate them against the Belgian stones ??

$30 shipped sounds a very good price - can I ask where from?

These were mentioned before by a few members and are from www.manufactum.de
Not the same source as mine but honestly a better choice if you are in Europe/UK as I cannot compete against EU shipping and exchange rates. Mine factor in lapping and easing of the edges though in addition to the trip across the Atlantic.

Thanked: 0They're NOT from Manufactum. I got it from a tool site recommended on a German sraight razor forum. These are supposed to be of superior quality to those sold by manufactum.

I got the price wrong - it was 30 euros (£20) not $, but that was for the biggest size. The 150 x 50 was 19 Euros + 8 shipping. Still a good price.

PS. don't bother trying to order from Manufactum.de. as they don't ship to the UK. The reason being that there is a UK Manufactum site - Manufactum.co.uk BUT the UK site doesn't stock this item !!Last edited by northpole; 12-31-2006 at 07:11 PM.

That's a new one to me, but there are a few German retailers for these. I know Manufactum has a several websites and not all will ship or sell the same items to all locations. Before I sold Thurnigens I tried buying one from Manufactum but shipping was about equal to the stone.

I know, I had a crazy conversation with their Sales people, who told me that Manufactum will not sell from one country to another where there is a Manufactum branch, to stop Sales being lost to the home branch.
"But you dont sell this item in the UK" I said.
" I know - Crazy isnt it!" she said.
Go figure.
Thanks for the link

There's been a lot of discussion on nassrasur.com whether the Thuringers from Muller Schleiftechnik are better than those of Manufaktum.
I have a Manufaktum one and I think it is a great stone. Maybe a bit slower than my coticule but considering its price I think the Manufaktum Thuringer is great VFM.
A German guy I have been e-mailing with has also got a few vintage Thuringers and they are identical to the Manufaktum stones.
I think Muller Schleiftechnik do ship to the UK. They sell a variety of sizes and are not very expensive either.Last edited by Kees; 01-01-2007 at 04:25 PM.

Thanked: 0Yes, I came across similar info on the German forums, which said that those sold by Manufactum and the one i've bought would be just as good as vintage stones.
I think everyone will have their own take on which stones are best, but I think they will all be pretty similar.

Sorry, do not mean to highjack but,I am wondering how this Thuringen stone would compare to the 12K at woodcraft:
