Thanked: 1936Where's the sweet 16?
I'm probably the biggest advocate for the Shapton GS's here at SRP. Only time I use the 220 or 500 is for razor repairs, but they are great for knives. After a light lapping, I would only use the 1200 Atoma to keep them flat. Keep your spray bottle handy as they like to run wet.
If I can be of assistance, please don't hesitate to PM me as I still mostly use my GS's.Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you and God Bless, Scott

I use the Shapton GS stones almost exclusively. I'd also recommend not using the plates to create slurry. It's not needed on the Shaptons. You'll just be wasting good stone. Water alone is fine, They are fast cutters. Faster than you'd think, so remember, less is more. If you find yourself doing hundreds of laps, somethings wrong.
PM Shooter immediately...... and he's right..Get the 16. You'll be glad you did. By the time I get to that stone, I find I only need 5-10 laps depending on the blade. It's easy to go to far on the 16, which will make the edge feel harsh. Eventually, you'll be able to feel it.
Good choice btw, Congrats!Last edited by zib; 02-01-2013 at 04:53 PM.

Thanked: 8Thanks for the encouragement.
Spent a morning with Oz and he conveniently had the Shaptons sitting there unused as he went the the Pros, got them for a good price, and they were pretty much lapped as a bonus.
The Atomas were bought solely with the intent of lapping so don't worry about stone being wasted on slurry.
I've currently got a Gotta on the stones with a somewhat uneven bevel and a chip near the toe that won't go. But will get there eventually I'm sure.
Edit: a higher grit stone be it a Shapton or natural is on the cards but not until I can do these stones justice!!Last edited by mud13s; 02-02-2013 at 01:29 AM.
