Knives are just like razors, they are worth what people will pay for them. You get production razors going for hundreds of £/$ as well. I suppose you can't take it with you, get what makes you happy. For some it's fast cars or designer suits, for others it's quality knives and straight razors.

I can't agree with that statement.
Sebensa's aside, a well crafted EDC of good material and design is worth a lot more to me

Cheap tools is misplaced economy...

I have used Mora knives for years at work, and they sure did the job.
They cost about ten bucks or so up here.
But a Rockstead at 1500 they are not.

So, to each his own I guess

Apropos of nothing:

I think in allot of cases, many people can't get the most out of their harder and more expensive steels (ie - can't hone them properly), and therefore assume that there is less value in them than the less expensive knives with less expensive steels that are easy to hone (and dull).


All said and done, being most of us aren't away from our regiment of honing stones for long periods of time foraging new paths through unknown wildernesses, there may be something to not needing the hard steels. That said, I for one will labour for hours if need be to get my more expensive and harder steels honed to their potential.

A quality knife deserves quality love ... as do all knives really .

The title of this thread is EDC knife. To me that is what is in my pocket and gets used every day. Not a frilly collectible that has a bead on the end. The Sebensa knifes are factory made with what appears to me to be good advertising. Nothing special. My EDC is a Kershaw Leek that cost around $50. It is used and abused sitting in my pocket along with my change. If I need to cut a piece of wire I will use it to do the job. [Time to get the hones out tonight!] It is ugly and scratched up but I don't spend time looking at it unless it is to be used at the moment. My mind keeps returning to my thoughts about Harley Davidson motorcycles. Nothing special about them either but good advertising and marketing.

I carry a Kershaw Skyline that cost $35. Yes, cuts just the same. That doesn't mean that we don't enjoy more expensive things. Almost everyone has hobbies that they spend money on that seem senseless to others (like straight razor shaving, or archery, or watches, etc). Most people on this forum spend more than they have to to accomplish the act of shaving.
I understand your point and believe me I spent years deciding to buy a Sebenza.
My wife likes going to Disneyland - seems like a waste of money to me, but it makes her happy so I say "enjoy!"
And so to all of us on SRP- here's to the finer things in life that we like - and enjoy!

There is such a thing as "pride of ownership" as much as anything else. But let's have a look at this particulair example of the Sebenza. Whilst I don't own one myself. (I'm not a big fan of the looks of the thing, I like the Micarta Insert versions but lefthanders in that version are hard to find) it's an EXCELLENT knife.

Here's a couple of reasons why it costs so much and some reasons why so many people LOVE carrying it as an actual EDC:

- Chris Reeve (The Sebenza is made by CRK, Chris Reeve Knives) helped develop S30V steel specifically for cutlery purposes. It's one of the first steeltypes to have this done EVER.
- The handle is made out of titanium, which as well as being quite pricey to buy is also expensive to machine since it's hard on tools but most importantly Titanium will take a beating and come back begging for more whilst it weight very little. The light weight combined with the size of the knife is part of the apeal.
- The machining on the knife is insanely exact. The tolerances are almost creepily small. This makes that the knife will KEEP functioning for a LOOOOOONG time. (there are owners out there who've been carrying one for 20+ years.....$400 spread out over 20 years really isn't that bad)
- The design is brilliant. And so simple that owners are actually ENCOURAGED to take the knife apart and clean it every now and then....as far as I know....there is no other company that does this and most will void your warrenty when you do.
- They've won countless prizes for "Quality" at the blade show...year after year.
- They're one of the very few companies that also make dedicated lefthanded knives.

To you $400 might not be EDC money. But some people don't have a problem with this. After all...I've also got a $500 phone in my pocket, and a $300 watch on my wrist and both get used and abused all over the place.

And chances are....a man's $400 knife will outlast both those other devices.

Nothing wrong with not liking something.....but there's a WHOLE lot more to CRK Sebenza's than advertising and marketing.


Damn.....now I kind of want one myself.

What I find funny about this latest point of focus on EDC knive cost is; if any sane person walked into the Shave Dens of the members who posted here, that person's first thought would be,"You've got to be F*&$*#g kidding me!!"

Here's my updated EDC since I reprofiled the very poor Spyderco factory edge now my UKPK as the edge she as always deserved.

I am going to reply to my own thread so hopefully I don't offend anyone in particular.

Many of the knifes that I see in this thread are what I consider "pocket jewelry" not EDC.
