Same problem: I'm in NYC too, and the weapons laws here are fairly stringent.

I carry a Boker Subclaw - sweet little solidly-built locking folder with a 2.75" handle and a 1.75" blade curved like a linoleum knife. The handle has jimping top and bottom, a deep finger choil behind the blade, and fluting ridges all over the rigid G10 scales, so you can get a real solid grip on it even though the handle doesn't even fill your hand. It would be nobody's choice of a weapon but as a last-ditch defensive slasher it would do considerable damage and likely change an attacker's mind in a hurry.

For utilitarian purposes I carry a Leatherman Juice in my man-purse . . . uh, manly gear-bag, and an SAK in my other pocket. I recently misplaced the SAK and I'm heartsick about it - I can't bring myself to acquire another pocket-knife in its place.
