S30V is asteel specifically designed for use in knives. It is actually described as having a fine grained microstructure with very uniformly spaced carbides in the martensitic form which provides toughness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. Yes this will cause some difficult sharpening in the 58-59 Rockwell range, but nothing worse than a good straight with a 60-62 Rockwell. Another point is that S30V has an increased transverse toughness which will actually make it less prone to chipping. I hope this will help to clarify for some of the other knife-nuts and steel snobs like me.

    Thanks Christopher
They actually aren't my opinions. I heard as much from Mike Stewart, owner and chief designer of Bark River Knife and Tool. I don't have much experience with S30V, but I certainly trust his knowledge of steel.

There are only two things I ever heard about Mike Stewart: 1) he makes a great knife. And 2) you can't trust anything he says. That said, I think I'll go find out about S30V on my own.

I carry around a Kershaw 1460 Splinter I absolutely adored ever since I received it.

At home but not for carrying around: Rockstead Higo. Heck, I almost don't dare using that one ...

    Well, I'm afraid I can't do that.
You see, every week I find 10 minutes to sit there and just LOOK at it.
Hm, I wonder whether I could shave off it ...

I've been carrying a Leatherman Skeletool the last 6 months or so. I love it! I wasn't carrying anything prior to that, and I don't know how I got through the day!

The big pliers can actually do some work, the screwdriver part functions well (as does the bottle opener), the only downside is that the basic skeletool blade dulls pretty quick. I may upgrade to the CX for the sake of the higher grade blade alone.

I had a Kershaw Nakamura for awhile, beautiful knife, but I always reached for the skeletool, so I gave up on the Nakamura...

I carry a home-made knife in the traditional style from the part of Norway I am from, it has got a laminated carbon steel blade with a hard center laminated between soft and flexible steel sides.
My grandfather carried and made similar one for his entire life.
The problem is that it doesn't go too well with my uniform, so I am getting one of the tiny small bokers for that use.

I usually am carrying more than one knife. But the knife that I would consider my EDC knife is a Entrek USA, JAG model. Carried in a inside the waistband sheath.
