ummm the Garlic Knot!!!!!,, if you guys don't go to this meet you need a kick in the rear. I traveled 700 miles for it myself, so anyone near Denver should go ,, you will learn a bunch , even though honing isn't as important as stropping a well honed razor from one of the pros till you can shave , but they can show you how. but the friendship and the talk is just awesome, a great bunch of guys in that town Tc

Sorry to report my first experience with SRD was not the best. I'm pretty sure the Dovo 5/8 razor was not shave ready. I stand to be corrected, but I could not get even one pass to cut. I returned the razor for SRD to review. My technique could not be that bad?? Does anyone have any experience with "Hart Steel" American made razors?

I haven't even started using a straight yet. I have 4 straights that need touching up and I need to complete the hardware acquisition of stones and a strop.

You may want to wait till after the meet to get stones. You can probably sample a few there and see what you like.

SRD did promptly return my Dovo Straight 5/8 razor with a better edge than the original send. I'm back in business. Todays first shave went well, but I have a long way to go. Still working the easy areas, but getting a little more adventuresome. Can't wait until the January 14th meeting.

My experience with straights before my first Denver meeting was sketchy. After, I was MUCH better. Hang in there. It does get better!

Demetrius, Do you shave with the straight every day? If not, how many time per week?

I probably average about five straight shaves each week, except when I'm on a break from school. Then I use one every day. (I'm a teacher.) There are usually a couple of work mornings each week when I still use a safety razor, more for speed than anything else. I'm getting really comfortable with straights, but if I'm in too much of a hurry, that's when I can have some trouble. There are days too, when I can tell after the first straight pass that it's not going well (usually lather problems) so I will switch to a safety razor to finish up. That doesn't happen very often anymore, but I'm still only a little less than a year into this journey. The really great shaves now happen most of the time and my speed has improved a lot too. Good luck and I'll see you in January.
