Welcome to SRP and to the incredible world of Straight Razor Shaving. I started straght shaving when I was 18 and inherited my granfather's solingen, so similar starts. It's been a love affair with straight razors and straight razor shaving ever since.

Utopian made you a fine offer IMO. Having a veteran examine your work and your blade is always a good idea. After he hones it and sends it back, you will then have a benchmark of what a finely honed razor should feel like on your beard.

That is a fine looking razor, and I think your Portland will be a good investment too. There will be other razors in the future I am sure of that.

Welcome and that is a beautiful razor. And definitely read the info in the library section. And watch the videos by Lynn on shaving. Most importantly ask questions here, there is always someone here or soon to come on willing to help out a fellow wetshaver. My second razor was professionally honed when I received it, and it was night and day to the others that were said to be shave ready! I have been honing for 8 months now and if that razor was mine I would still send it out to be honed at this point in my skill level. For learning how to hone I found Lynn and gssixguns videos and asking questions here to be the most beneficial for my learning. I still have a lot to learn about it. Good luck on your journey!

I purchased a Dovo 5/8 full hollow stropped it and tried shaving with it, I found it very uncomfortable compared the the Bartmann. Utopian was kind enough to accept both the Dovo and the Bartmann to hone up and provide feedback on my honing / stropping.

The Portland Razor came in yesterday and I tried it this morning for the first time. I found that it was comfortable and seemed to shave well, I would not say that it was any better than the Bartmann when I did use the Bartmann. I will be interested so see what Utopian finds on the Bartmann, I am thinking I may have gotten lucky and honed it proper on my first try (not to be getting cocky). No matter what I am taking all of your advice and setting it aside as to not destroy it.

Does anyone happen to have any advice on a similar razor to the Bartmann, either old or new? I believe it is a 6/8 round point, manganese steel, but I do not know if it is 1/4 hollow or half.
