At the moment I am using a very small, smooth, chrome cup and my lather is coming out great. If you have a good soap and get the water right, you shouldnt have an issue regardless of size.

With that being said I am purchasing a bowl with a textured bottom for an even easier time to lather.

As I said I can get quite a decent lather going in that little plastic soap dish, but I find a larger bowl easier freom thr point of view of the mechanics of mixing, ie the size of swirl I can do, and the lather not coming over the side.
Bread and water can so easily become tea and toast

I use a ceramic dollar store soup bowl with jug handles. It's unfinished and rough on the inside and makes it ridiculously easy to build a terrific lather.

$2 AUD soup mug from Coles food store, has a wide enough bowl to lather in, is deep and has steep sides so the lather does not go over the edge. I stick that in a bowl I used to use when I could be bothered with some hot water. Keep the water dripping into the bow beside the mug and the water stays nice and hot. Besides that, whatever gets the lather going gents.
A good lather is half the shave.

If my sink held water for 10mins while I shower I would not need a bowl or a mug as I face lather. But as it doesn't hold water I use a mug to soak my brush and thats it…. My skin hates hot lather, so I cold shave so no point in owing a scuttle either.

Bowl if I use a bowl but you need to change the question to '...bowl, scuttle, mug or face...'

I've been face lathering for several years, only using a bowl on occasions, never really saw the need for a scuttle.

A couple weeks ago I broke down and ordered a Georgetown G12 scuttle. I will probably still mainly face lather, but the scuttle was well worth it's money, so much better than using a bowl, and nothing beats hot lather on a cold winter day

Then it's time to lay down and wait for it to pass.
