The 120'F set point from the factory is for liability reasons. 120 won't scald you.
At my work we have 3 different settings for water heaters. 120 for anything that touches humans. 140 to kill bugs in the water therefore not having to treat it chemically. And 180 that is mainly for the dish machine.
At home I set my water heater so I take a shower with only the hot turned on. To tell the truth I don't know exactly where that is for myself...

Congratulations Jerry on your purchase. Pottery is fired at 1000 F to 1400 F+- I missed the memo on not putting the SWK scuttle in the microwave. I’ve been doing it for 9 years and never had a problem which includes the new SWK recently purchased.
IF you decide to try this, you must condition the scuttle with hot water prior to nuking for 2 to 3 min so you do not shock. Soak wash cloth for pre-shave face wrap and dribble on to soap to soften. Steaming HOT water will burn.

Finally got a SWK yesterday and used it this morning and Daddy likes it a lot! Super easy to get a lather going and I really enjoyed warm lather for the whole shave. It didn’t even take anymore time to use so may be using this daily.

Congrads on getting your scuttle. It is a nice thing to ha e warm lather. The heat does breakdown the lather some but in time you will find it dont take much to keep the lather worked up. I do enjoy mine and use it with most shaves. Even if its just to soak my brush when face lathering.
Now that ive had the SWK for a while i will say that i think it could have been better if it had a larger area for hot water. This might make the lather stay warmer longer as i find the need to dump mine out and put hot water back in it after a while to get the lather warm as id like it. Now this could be becuase i got the smaller one but in the end, the scuttle is a good thing! It's just Sharpening, right?

I also have a SWK, and I fill it with hot water, both resivior and bowl while I strop my razor.
Then dump it and refill with hot water. Seems to be the way to go for me

How do you guys prepare your scuttle?
I boil water in a boiling pot. I then fill my scuttle up to the top and let it sit for about two minutes as well as inside the bowl mid-depth. I then dump that water and re-fill the bottom reservoir up again and then I put my soap/paste in the bowl then add a dab of the formerly boiling hot water to the bowl then load my brush with tap water then mix the soap to create my lather.
I get a very warm (not hot) resultant lather that would make you go to sleep if you were not the barber at hand doing the cutting!German blade snob!

Thanked: 556I find that if the water in the scuttle’s water jacket is too hot, the lather degrades pretty quickly. Am I doing something wrong?

That is normal. Heat makes lather run away. Ha.
I will fill both areas with WARM tap water. Drop my brush in. Shower. Get out of sbower and remove brush. Dump and fill both areas with hot tap water. Prep my face and brush teeth. Dump again and add hot tap water to insides. Make lather. It's just Sharpening, right?

If you have hot water at around 130f you can just fill the scuttle inside and out and maybe 5 minutes later dump it and refill the inside only and you have hot lather for your entire shave.
