    Otto that shave mug you inherited from your Grandfather is sensational !!

    The first two mugs in my collection are both 'Old Spice Shaving Mugs'. I grabbed them off Ebay for about the going rate. The mug on the left in the photo has a minor crack on the handle so I didn't end up paying for it. It will still work fantastically as a daily shave mug, with the little crack will not be collectable.

    The left is a late 1950's / early 1960, the mug on the right I believe is an 01 Belgium Series by the markings on the bottom.

    I found a fantastic link that helped me clarify the age of my Old Spice mugs, so here it is so it can help anybody else:

    Mug Index

    Cheers,

    Otto, it must be fantastic to have your grandfathers shaving mug with all that history behind it. Wonder what soap or cream you used on the mugs 100'th birthday

    I mostly use a SW XL scuttle, but when on trips or holidays I use a
    Georgetown Pottery scuttle I bought a few years ago.

    Looking back through SOTD gave me an answer to that;
    In May 2010 I was using
    Soap: TSD Coffee
    I think my Grandfather would have approved of the choice.
    He loved his coffee black, strong and hot. And plenty of it.

    My father has an Old Spice mug lying around somewhere in the house... but it currently contains spare screws, washers, paper clips and other... junk. It would do nicely though with a puck of Tabac in it, I'm sure.

    I normally use whatever bowl the soap comes in, e.g. Creed, DR Harris, Trumpers, etc. The one time I had a mug for shaving it was a Kent and I totally recommend them. Nice wide open top which allows for easy mug-lathering.

    I'm using a walnut wood bowl that I found in some of my mother's old stuff. I don't know what it's original purpose was. It has a patent number on it, so I looked it up and the patent was submitted by a stave company in Lebanon, MO. Anyway, it's been working great for me, but the finish is getting kinda weird in a few spots, so maybe it wasn't intended for liquids? I ordered a scuttle the other day, but it won't be here till February. Till then, it's the mystery bowl!!
