Thanked: 3225Got my bowl at the Sally Ann for 69 cents I believe it was. I found that one about 4-5 inches in dia. and about 3-4 inches deep with a slight flair out at the top works for me. Narrower and/or deeper and I am banging the brush against the sides while whipping up a lather.

Thanked: 0Right now I am using a ceramic bowl I found in our cabinets that we never use. (Don't tell my wife.) I am in the process of ordering a scuttle from Robert's Feats of Clay. I say if your not looking into a scuttle, then any soup mug or latte mug will do just fine.

It is a matter of personal taste, I myself like your Semper Fi mug and can not see you doing any better.

As long as you can get your brush in with ample room to make lather without the dimensions getting in the way, then you have the perfect bowl.

The giant soup mugs are cool. I like to browse the secondhand stores for bowls and soap dishes. Here's what I came up with for a homemade scuttle/bowl:

Cheap...and the stainless conducts heat well. Keeps my lather nice and warm.
Cheers!

Switched over to using a Suribachi a few months ago. Works great with all soaps and creams.

I picked up a nice handmade miso soup bowl in china town was only $5. It has a rough texture on the inside which helps whip up the lather quick. Fits in the palm of my hand well too.

Before scuttles, i used a metal candy dish because it would heat up quickly.

Gentlemen,
I have a variety of bowls, including a classic pewter and one in copper. My preferred is the handsome Ayars/Bonnyman lather bowl, although mine was modified slightly smaller by Sara Bonnyman. Alas, these days I face lather and my lather bowls sit idle. The important point to note is that any bowl will work as long as it's large enough to allow the brush to swirl with ease. If you can find something with some type of a ridge in it, that will work even better to trap the lather.
