Spurtling spurtlemaker! Say that with a bit of a Scots accent - kind of sounds like an insult :) of course you would need to be spurtling with the spurtle that you made to be called it.
My sandwich...Ham, tomato and bread & butter sandwich pickle slices w/ sandwich spread.
Yummy!

You'll have to share your recipe now mate. You've got the colour that I'm striving for, in your bread. Post the recipe for me...Or PM it if it's some sort of family traditional secret and I promise I won't tell. :)

Mick,
That breakfast looks scrumptious. I'll FedEx my bread to you, if you'll FedEx me your breakfast.
Truth tell, I think the look is just a difference in the lighting. I have no secret recipe for Russian Black Bread--except "1-Click" at Amazon.com.

My wife, who is the real cook in the house, suggests adding some or more of the following: Blackstrap Molasses, unsweetened cocoa and instant coffee to your mix if you want your black bread darker in color.
I used Treacle because I thought it would be a bit darker than the Molasses (I have that in stock as well). Unsweetened cocoa might be the go as I already have two teaspoons of instant coffee in the mix. I don't won't to go too strong on the coffee in the mix, though another teaspoon might make very little difference in taste, but add to the richness of colour.
I use a bread machine, but I make it from scratch i.e. no pre-mixed flour.

When I arrived home tonight my wife and her girlfriend had been experimenting and starting to grill. I read the posts about spurtles and decided to carve myself one. I have some dry Cedar walking stick blanks in my backyard. This is what I came up with. It was a pleasant evening in the backyard with friends and eating interesting experimental food.
