How about Sweet Potato Vodka?
Beattie's Distillery gets a plug on my page every once in a while, and deservedly so. They are very nice people, like most farm folk, and have managed to be more than a little creative in their selection of spirits. If you want to read what I am talking about, you can search out my reviews of their Potato Vodka and Poitin elsewhere on this page (and shame on you for not having already read them). Go on . . . I'll wait.
Right . . . tonight I am going to be telling you about Beattie's Sweet Potato Vodka, specifically batch #002. I'd like to tell you about #001, but the bottle did not last very long, which might tell you where things are heading. Harrison (Beattie's Distiller) will tell you that Sweet Potato offer it's own unique complications in distillation, quite separate from potatoes, but he has managed to turn out something quite interesting just the same.
The nose is quite unique on this spirit, bringing to mind olives. Now, as someone who only eats olives on a pizza, it was not me that came up with this description. Two separate people came up with the comment during a distillery tour and tasting, and I have confirmed it at home by taking a whiff from an olive jar at home. I have no idea how that happens, but there it is.
On the palate, the spirit is thin, with a hint of minty sweetness. The "olives" character is still present, more as an aftertaste than flavour, but it is very very light tasting. Overall, it is very easy to drink neat, as there is virtually no ethanol "burn" whatsoever. This may be due to it's bottling at 30% abv (one of the complicating effects of using sweet potatoes is that higher alcohol content is fairly unpalatable).
This Vodka enjoys a unique space on the shelf for me. It is something I would recommend to those who want to enjoy a true cocktail like a martini, but have a little trepidation about whether they would enjoy that much alcohol without a lot of "mix" to ease the taste. With this spirit you can make a Vodka Martini that is every bit as flavourful, but without the stronger alcohol content to trouble your palate. For me, I'll take it as a 50/50 highball with carbonated water from my Sodastream. cheers

YUKON JACK
The self-styled 'Black Sheep of Canadian Liquors' is a highly potent (100 Proof) liqueur, based on Canadian whisky blended with honey.
One to warm the cockles on a cold winter's night.
Yukon Jack is near the top of my list.
I never had a problem with throat burn, maybe it's the honey!

I'm a transplanted Yankee, but believe my genes are the Scots-Irish settlers who settled in the mid Atlantic hills. Here in North Carolina, 'shine is an art. I've had a lot of expensive, high-end alcoholic beverages in my time, but good 'shine is still the really good stuff!

I am also a transplanted Yankee from Ohio, been here in TN for almost 40 years now.
I've got a friend here that makes his own, some real fine drinking and he keeps a jar in his freezer for me when I stop by to visit. Now, I'm not taking anything away from Climax, its some mighty fine drinking shine especially since its legal govt. regulated, better than some others I've tasted. Its still hard to beat the illegal stuff when its done right............Last edited by DoughBoy68; 12-20-2019 at 11:36 PM.
