Finally! I gave the last few grams of my previous sencha to a friend and opened this sayamamidori sencha—light-steamed, from Kagoshima Prefecture:
I've seen it described as being a 'bold yellow' in colour, though it seemed a little paler to me (first hand—it does look rather bold in the photos). Either my idea of bold is warped or I was doing it wrong...
Interestingly, I thought that the first steep of this tea was the best—it still has that rounded sweetness that you'd expect but it has an earthy, savoury tone that makes it quite different to any other asamushi sencha that I've tried.
Subsequent steeps are very nice, but it seemed to me that they lose that savouriness. As a relatively inexpensive tea, I could have highly recommended it, except it's out of stock now and I think stock was limited to last year's harvest, anyway, so I don't expect to see it back this year. I'm sure this would be very nice shincha, though. I'll be keeping my eye out for it.
