    AAAUUGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

This new grinder I was sent to replace the Baratza, that was making horrible noises, is a great grinder.
But obviously the old one was way more messed up right from the get. I am back to square one figuring out my grind.
I am 2 macro settings higher, and 6 micro setting in the same direction.
The shots are coming out in less than 20 seconds.........and NOT good.

Oh what we do for just ONE good Espresso..........

Why not just eat the beans, and wash it down with some hot water. I know, its liquid life...nothing moves without it.

While you are hunting the perfect grind.

If brew time through the espresso machine is the issue give the
AeroPress a go. The advantage it has is it is a lot less dependant on
the grind. Coffee goes in and is then stirred and let to brew then
the plunger expresses the coffee when it is time. In this way it
is a bit like a french press but the filtered product is filtered better and
    has crema.

The aeropress like a cone filter is tolerant of the shattered bits of
the $20 buzz grinders. Tolerant is the wrong word... they shift the
responsibility for brew time to the hands of the coffee maker.

Once the grinder and the espresso machine are adjusted
life is grand. But while that is happening these are better than
chewing beans and drinking hot water the way "outback" seems
    to do ;-)

    Thanks!!!

But I wanna be tough like Mike

I have a few other ways to enjoy my coffee. A syphon pot as well as a Chemex pour over.
So there really isn't a loss of good coffee round here.

    Aloha!

I absolutely know this. And personal taste is so important here.

On another forum, I posted that I absolutely love "Jacobs Kronung" from Germany in my espresso machine (or Moka Pot) as I think it makes one of the finest espresso cups I ever tasted.

A German responded that I was nuts. He said Jacobs Kronung couldn't possibly make a good cup of espresso as it was a COFFEE blend and NOT an ESPRESSO blend. I told him that it was very rich and robust compared to many AMERICAN coffees, and that it does TO MY TASTE make a superior cup of espresso. He apologized and admitted that personal taste is everything.

But I understand his point. It would be like if we read that a German was saying that Maxwell House was the finest Espresso blend he ever encountered. We'd think he was off his rocker. Jacobs Kronung is the Maxwell House (common coffee) of Germany, so Germans consider this a drip or perk coffee blend only to be pounded down at breakfast to wake up. But to my taste, it's plenty robust enough to hang with most espresso blends.
And speaking of waking up, it certainly has enough octane to get me revved in the morning.

    Dieseld et al:

It just so happens I now need a new burr grinder. I came home the other day, and SWMBO had thrown out my beloved burr grinder because she said it was getting "Warm" on its own just by being plugged in - not grinding. I said, "Did you UNPLUG IT and see if it cooled off?" She said, "No, I just pulled it out of the kitchen and walked it out to the dumpster because I didn't want it to catch fire."

ARGH! This was NOT a cheap grinder! I ran out to dumpster dive, but as bad luck would have it, the garbage had been picked up.

So now, I am in the market for a Grinder as well. Hopefully one that does not "get warm" so SWMBO doesn't toss it in the dumpster again.

Yes. I understand if an appliance is getting warm you may worry it will catch fire. But hokey smokes, I'd unplug it first and foremost. And I'd not chuck it in the trash dumpster on a whim.

But all things happen for the best. At least that's what I tell myself so I don't worry about something I can't undo. For all I know she might have saved the condo from catching fire. And in the scheme of things, what's another C note for a good burr grinder? Now I have the fun of picing one out at Amazon.

On another topic, lately I've been using Kona as espresso. Interesting. Very mellow, as Kona usually is. I suspect that most coffee aficionados would scoff at me using Kona for espresso. But what the heck. Experimentation makes it fun.

There are many fine burr grinders out there that's for sure.

I've made Espresso using Kona, and you're right, it was quite good.

And what a great way you are looking at things with the grinder. You sir, are a true gentleman
