Don't use balms too often but found Nivea and Simpsons to be pretty good. The surprise one for me was Tiger Aftershave and Skin Tonic. It had a mild citrus scent and contained aloe vera which seemed to sooth and nourish. Seemed like AS and balm rolled into one.

You really have to try a few and see what works for your skin.

I think the most moisturizing balm I have used is Pre de Provence No. 63. I regularly use Nivea Sensitive and Trumper's skin food but they don't moisturize as well as the No. 63.

Not sure if it classes as a balm or a moisturiser really, but I really like Trumper's Skin Food a lot. I have even been known to use it as a pre-shave and mixed it in with soap or cream when lathering. I have heard it said that it can even fix a squeaky door (haven't tried that one myself) and it really lasts a long time. The extract of limes is my go to most often.

An inexpensive everywhere available solution is Jergens lotion with Shea Butter. Don't let your wife try it or it'll be gone in a couple days.

I have tried all of their products, including their new brand. I think the aftershave oil is great in the winter. Otherwise, it is a bit much for me. If you like it, you will also like Meißner Tremonia's Red Mandarin Menthol Shaving & Body Butter. The menthol is a very nice touch.

Sapone Di Paolo Inodoro for me. A little goes a long way and unscented is a plus.

I'll second Meißner Tremonia's Shaving & Body Butter. I prefer the Pure unscented. I have very dry skin. It is heavy but like RobinK says but in dry winter is great. I've had great luck with razor burns and razor bumps with it.

Har! Great for bar elbows too.

I've always used Corn Huskers lotion. After I pat dry (not wipe...pat) my face, a dot about the size of a small grape of corn huskers feels great on my cheeks and neck. About 5mins later, after I dress, I splash my fav aftershave (not colonge...aftershave)...which happens to be Stetson. Been doing this for 25 or so years.
