Their Bay Rum (Ogallala) is a proprietary formula, but there are some reciepies I found on the interent as it is a formula of decades old, and has no patent. His primary carrier is Witch Hazel and the low alcohol content, along with 11 different herbs and spices....wait.. I'm thinking of the Colonel. LOL

I can't say enough good things about the stuff. My advice is to skip the $15 sample pack. For only about $10 more you can gt a full bottle (trust me, you'll like it. I'll take it off your hands if you don't) and as has been said previously, they throw in a few samples anyway.

I'd go with the sampler pack, just to see what you like. For me, it's a tie between the standard Bay Rum and the Bay Rum w/ Lime & Peppercorns.

I've hear they have a bay rum shave soap with shea butter. How good a soap is it. Does it smell as good as the aftershave?

MY bonanza pak came in and I had to check out all of the samples. The straight bay rum and bay rum with sandlewood seem to have a vanilla base scent. I think the lemon and peppercorns have the best scent.

When I bought the 8 oz. Genuine Ogallala Bay Rum, they threw in 3 sample bottles of the other varieties. The Bay Rum Original is my favorite though

Not meaning to have a go at the company as I know they have a great reputation and are run by a small [family?] business that has gone from strength to strength since it started.
I think it's worth trying it out first before getting a full bottle. I wanted to try a bay rum aftershave and got the original one from Ogallala - a full bottle, as here it used to be hard to get the sample pack. It must have been the clove oil or alcohol that didn't work for me. Turned out to be napalm aftershave for me. Never used anything so strong before in my life. My lip and eyes swelled up from how strong it was. No idea why I reacted so badly to it, but all I'm saying is when trying something new, proceed with caution as you never know.
Nonetheless, few days later, you could still smell it in the house. So if it's scent you want...

You might have gotten a bad bottle. I got the cologne, and I put it on and later I put it on again as it doesn't seem to linger very long. I'd call or write them about the situation. I don't like the one soap I have in the sample pack as it is kind of like putting on salsa. Really warms up my face, but that is the one. I'll have to take a look and see which one it is. I think I was fine with the Original Bay Rum soap though.
He uses Witch Hazel as a carrier and tones down the alcohol, so it might have been the clove oil in it.~~ Vern ~~

I too found that the bay rum orginal scent did not last very long, maybe only an hour. I'd like it to last longer.

rum,
You may have had an allergic reaction to the clove oil. It's rare, but it does happen.
You're absolutely right, though. If trying a fragrance for the first time, get the smaller version and try it out. You may find that the fragrance doesn't react with your body chemistry the way it does with somebody else."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain
