Sounds like your experiment had great results, Ed. I may just have to give it a try myself.
Here in the US, Arm & Hammer makes toothpaste with some baking soda in it. I used to buy it years ago, but stopped because it is more expensive then regular toothpaste.
Also, I've heard of people using sand and their finger to brush their teeth, so I figured baking soda has got to be easier on the teeth.You can take the boy out of NY, but you can't take NY out of the boy.

Thanked: 375Ed, I use baking soda once in a blue moon to brush my teeth. I think it's a little to abrasive to use all the time. To help with that saltiness try mixing it with your regular toothpaste. I know here I can get baking soda tooth paste elminating the need to do that. But again probably cheaper to buy a box.
edit: looks like I was beat to the Arm & Hammer tooth paste..........CHRIS

I never like the taste of the baking soda toothpaste that is sold in the us .. It's ok but not something I would use everyday.. But now I believe they have actually made the same toothpaste in many different flavors. My wife informed me we actually had st Ives apricot facial scrub in the house.. It was buried under her other 100 facial products.. So ill be giving it a go tomorrow so ill let guys know how it goes.

It appears that my baking soda experement has been running for a month and a half or so now, and my teeth are definately whiter, and I drink about 5 really quite large coffees a day. The only comment I have had was when I used baking soda at home and my wife said my breath smelled odd, but I think the stuff we had there was a bit "stale". I do keep a tube of real toothpaste in the cupboard but have only used it once. I should also say that I used to have slightly sensitive teeth and have not had any problems.

Thanked: 375Comet and a Brillo! brave man! Si. it taste like crap! but as Ed pointed out, effective stain remover for the teeth too. Hydrogen peroxide will do the same thing as far as whitening teeth but doesn't taste any better. A lot of these thing's are used in beauty products sold for higher dollars - there just put in a pretty bottle, and a few extra ingredients, maybe a nicer scent, but if you look at these "new" products, the base ingredients are something simple like Witch Hazel, Baking soda, Hydrogen Peroxide when they're really effective and really cheap all by their self. Saving you 15% in 15 minutes................oh wait that's, that dam commercial. We are all so gullible today, they do a very good job of separating us from our cash

@edhewitt,
I tried it last night and it was effective in whitening. *I*, however, would not make it a daily thing after reading up on it on the net. From what I can gather, routine users of baking soda, hyperoxide, strawberries, etc., are likely to have accelerated recession of gums... I don't know that its 100 percent true, but I think I'll err on the side of caution and maybe use it once a week or something. YMMV.
