Thanked: 1I don't know if I would go so far as to say Noxema smells like toilet cleaner, but it certainly does not smell like Proraso. I prefer the Proraso in every aspect except for price.
Once your honing and shaving techniques are mastered, I suspect you can get good results from Life Boy rubbed on your beard with your hands. But I do not think that this replaces a fine shaving soap, a fine badger or boar brush or a fine ceramic scuttle to keep the lather warm. Some things I will continue to do because they are pleasant, Proraso pre-shave is among them. But for now as I am a rookie, if this practice helps me to lessen irritation due to my poor shaving technique, then that is a bonus as well.

Thanked: 23Good shaving technique would probably make up for a lack of good pre-shave or better soaps I suppose. I've only been at this for a year and when my technique is better I'm going to try Lava soap as a pre-shave and soap both. Well, that may be a bit on the ROUGH side.

I used the stuff when I started, then stopped using it figuring I didn't really need it.
Now, I absolutely use it, the one thing it brings to the table for me is a consistent shave experience.
Beard prep is vital to a good, close and comfortable shave, and beard hydration is a key factor in my opinion, and since I've been using the Proraso again, my shave have been closer and more comfortable, as as I mentioned, has become more consistent, regardless of the type of razor I use.
I have both, the Green and the White pre-shaves, both are excellent.

Thanked: 25I have a very wiry beard and I found that the Prorasco Pre/Post shave cream made a huge difference, especially in my problem areas. Much less tugging with the DE blades, even after using the blade for a day or two before hand. Much more comfy shave for me. I do a hot shower, soap up the face and let the soap sit on my face while I soap and rinse everything, finish off by rinsing my face off. I get out of the shower, towel off, and start lathering my soap. Adding the preshave in before I lather the soap really seems to soften my beard a lot.

Thanked: 13I too am a new str8 shaver who started using Proraso pre/post in the white container. I am starting to get very close and comfortable shaves every day. I think it is a combination of the Proraso, me building better lathers, and me getting experience with the razor. In any case I am very happy with the results I am getting, so I am not going to change anything for awhile. I also enjoy the menthol in the Proraso.

Yes, a necropost in praise of Proraso pre shave, which is fitting considering that I had stopped using this product around 5 years ago or so.
I recently found a tub of the stuff lying around, and I forgot how effective this product is, especially for tough wiry beards. My shaves are more confortable and I am less OCD about how sharp my razor is when I use this stuff.

Thanked: 81I only use the Proraso preshave if I shave without showering first, and it works really well. I recently ran out, and thought I'd try something different, since there were lots of sales at the time. I picked up some DR Harris and Baum.be preshave products - I like them both, but when comparing the performance vs price with the Proraso, the Proraso wins hands down (in my opinion, of course).
