EDIT: Here's advice from another ceramic scuttle maker; I hadn't considered the point about drying out the lather:
[LIST=1][*]Prewarm your scuttle. Warming your scuttle by filling it with hot tap water, or submerging it in a sink of hot water, will heat up the ceramic and avoid robbing your lather of heat when you're ready to shave.[*]Never use boiling water. Using boiling water in a hand-thrown ceramic vessel can cause cracking of the glaze or the pottery itself due to thermal shock. The greater the difference between the temperature of the pottery and the water poured into it, the greater the chances of thermal shock. Moreover, boiling water will cause your lather to dry out and collapse very quickly. Hot tap water is much more effective.
That is why you are appreciated around here. I never thought about drying out the lather.
The boiling water test I did was just to see what she was made of. If I break it the day it arrives ,I blame it on poor workmanship and 10 other excuses. 6 months down the road its all on me.
I will adjust the water temp as advised , makes perfect sense when you explain it.
Thank-you Sir.Your only as good as your last hone job.

I also use a porcelain gravy boat. Yes it freaks people out when they go in the bathroom. I say " What doesnt everyone have fine china in the bathroom?" ya know they used to call it a chamber pot. Oh sorry wrong application. Some people cant take a joke. But the look on their faces is priceless.

LoL! Silly me thought I was the only one. I suppose creative people will always Get-Er-Done. Unfortunately, I know the wife is being patient with me using her cookware for shaving. Purchasing this scuttle is as much for her as it is for me ...well not really, but that's my story!

I've always found using boiling water in those scuttles made them too hot and would break down the leather. Some soaps are really sensitive to heat.

Thanked: 3795I used a puck in a mug for over 20 years. I had never heard of a separate lathering bowl till coming to SRP. Then I used a ramekin for a lathering bowl. I finally broke down and got my first scuttle last year and I went all out and got a G20. It is awesome!

I found Razorocks holds up to heat better. My definition of hot is 180F.
Kells I love the scent and glide , Hot brush only good lather and it holds for a 15 min. 3pass shave. Filled hot scuttle this brand doesnt hold up in that situation. Maggards brand holds up to heat and hot scuttle method. L' Occitane brand holds up in hot scuttle as well.
What have others found??Your only as good as your last hone job.
