Thanks! that will start the gears a movin'. I prefer to build the lather in my mug vs on my face, (probably a bit of both in the morning rush), and love the feeling but I'm with you on "creating a mini series" every time I shave. Those special times when the experience can't be rushed and is really to be enjoyed, when it almost feels like playing...... I digress into the land of retirees.

I have always liked the looks of a one piece scuttle but with the added input it makes me think that a "system" would work better for all the choices we have to deal with as wet shavers. Maybe a base unit with different pieces to; hold soap for face latherers, lather- building bowls for the rest and any other needs. How about stack-able bowls for holding different soaps that would be able to be set in the base unit? This would all be along the lines of being able to add onto it as the individual desires.

    Happy shaving,
    G

When I first started with a straight , I had no scuttle. I looked around the house and found the collection of glass and crystal bells once belonging to my grandmother. I placed it inside a large mug of hot water and used it for months. I still use it on occasion because the handle works well for lathering . I would like to see a potter make a two piece scuttle with such a design. Name: DSCN0226.jpg

WIRM -That is exactly the kind of information I'm after! How did the handle sit in the scuttle? Does it rock or does the lip of the bell hold it all steady? I suppose you just set it in the scuttle and lift it out without working the lather up while in scuttle. (If that makes any sense to you) If the "handle" was more of a "knob" would that still work for you? How does the diameter and depth work for you? It looks to be about 2" in diameter and 2.5" deep, is that close? Thanks for your help.

I was a bit lucky in that I had about 100 bells to choose from. What I used for the base to hold the hot water was a double insulated plastic coffee mug from 7/11. And yes , that bell handle is perfect for making your lather ,and after whipping some up,just set it back into the hot mug. I love my G20 scuttle, but I do wish I could find a two piece that had a lift out bowl with the (Bell) handle. That would be the ultimate scuttle IMHO. P.S. You can attach a heavy rubber band around the outside of the bell to cushion the bell and provide a seal between bell and mug. The hard part will be finding the two items that fit without the handle bottoming out.

I got the G20 for Christmas. I have found filling the reservoir with water and enough water in the lather bowl to soak my brush then putting it in the microwave for 2 minutes gets the water warm enough and it lasts plenty long enough. I get the brush soaked in the later bowl then while applying soap to the brush I pour the water out of the bowl. Stopper keeps water in the reservior.

Some people rave about cold water shaves so this morning I put water in the scuttle like before but I put the scuttle in the frig for about an hour. I then soaked the brush in the cold water and created cold lather in the bowl. The lather is VERY cold at first but the initial shock only lasts a few seconds. While shaving the scuttle kept the lather cold just as it keeps warm lather warm. So you can do various things to get a shave with the temp lather you like. It doesn't bother me because I know the scuttle is clean but wife may not like the scuttle sitting in the frig. I will say that after this COLD shave my skin felt better than after using warm lather. I did two passes and sometimes my skin has felt tender but today after the cold lather shave it felt better I think. But I need to do this at least once more before I'll have an opinion about it. But the first shave with chilled water was a success.

I have been using the SRD scuttle and if I'm going to hold the scuttle in my hand I like it better. The G20 with water is pretty heavy. But as someone else said, this thing is heavy enough to sit solidly on the counter while whipping up the lather.

All in all a great scuttle. In my one year limited experience anyway.

If your "lather bowl bell" were in my house it would have been in a cabinet like this that wife loves to fill up. She has this one and 4 or 5 smaller ones. She buys various stuff and it just sits in there forever. Money for stuff just to look at. Gotta be a girl I guess.

She has things that belonged to here grandmother and if I snatched one of those things to use for shaving,,, OH BOY!

I got the G20 for Christmas so maybe I'll sneak my SRD scuttle in her cabinet and see if she notices it. I told here one day I was going to get a china cabinet to keep my power tools in.
