I read up on other posts regarding warning up lather in non scuttles..problem is..the problem is...the lather gets too hot and molecules breakdown..with a shave scuttle nothing will happen because of the way the scuttle is shaped and the material it is made of..again..my thoughts

It's not a true breakdown...And it depends on how hot the thing gets. I never had problems with my lather truly breaking down, so to speak, to a point of being unusable. If it does somehow fall part in consistency, just give it a good whip and you're GTG (Good To Go).

Wink Hot Lather, Stroping, Oily face and Variables

Thanks for your guyzes thoughts. I found that when my face is oily from not washing first, the lather breaks down fast. Nothing like a clean face. I am loving the heat produced by hot lather on my face, and just need to spend some time finessing it to my bathroom timeline.

Another question since we're on it, and you are all experts: When I feel 'tugging' from blade, can it mean that my hair is not soft enough, as well as the blade needs some strop action? I guess I need to make sure I'm covering all the variables rather than just assuming it's a dull blade.?

    Thanks again...

Well, I see what people mean by breakdown. You know, that's actually common when skin is oily. I tried using Stephan's smooth shave which has mineral oil in it...if I don't rinse it before lathering, then the lather "breaks down"...kinda like milk gone bad. But once this creme is washed away and rinsed, lather goes on smooth & thick.

As for tugging, my experience has been pressure and angle (mainly angle here) that are the culprit...If blade is sharp, it should cut through no matter what...but of course, it does help the blade, if the beard is softened up prior.

pre-shave prep is as important (if not more important) than the actual shave, IMHO.

Just my 2 cents (or less)

Tugging as my blade was doing would lead to believe it would need to be touched up a bit..but keep in mind..there could be more than a "touch up" that could be found
as I found out with my blade..Good Luck!

    Hello,

this is my first post. I just wanted to tell what I was thinking about: I want to make a scuttle(or better let it make as a birthday present) and was thinking about making a teapot warmer (well, a scuttle warmer in this case…) for it, pretty much like this:

    http://www.firstflush.ee/bw_client_f...apotWarmer.jpg

I don´t know, whether I need to keep my lather warm for so long yet (I don´t own a scuttle yet, I used my hand or a small cup), but this is something, I simply want to try. I don´t really like having electrical equipment in the bathroom. Using tea candles to keep the lather warm feels better to me. More old school, just like straight razor shaving.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Default still working on it...

Well, this hot pot is good, but I'm still perfecting the too hot problem but I'm sure I'll figure it out. I have a degree from a UC school. I will overcome, I will survive. Kind of just hoping to keep it mellow and easy and enjoy this experience of straight razor. I also (thanks Blade) firgured out how to remove the paste from my strop.... scrubbed it off with Simple Green, then took a 100 grit, then 220 grit sand paper to it...and it works great... there really isn't any rocket science to it...pretty easy... and the leather is smoothe as my face after straight razor shaving. My next step is to get the Naniwa 12k razor for touch ups... and keeping the blade smooth.

Thanks guys for all your ideas...

i'm pasting from one of my previous posts in a different thread, but...

some of the old-timers or purists may kill me, but i've found that using a tea cup and shallow saucer works great (i use an ikea dinera coffee cup and saucer). i've also gotten a wooden bowl to actually make the lather, since i like to have a lot of lather available for repeat passes, etc.

simply microwave water in the cup for 2 mins to get it nice and hot. dip your brush in it, shake off excess water, get some soap on your brush, and make your lather in the wooden bowl. once you've gotten a good lather going, 'scoop' it into the saucer and place the saucer on top of the cup. steam from the water heats the saucer and keeps the lather nice and warm.

    cheers,
