    Default Maximixe the HOT water...

Using the RIVAL hot pot I have:

    1. Got very hot water for my brush/lather

    2. Used the hot water to soak my (plastic) scuttle and got it hot inside, too.

    3. Used the left over hot water to pour over the blade, just to kind of clean it before drying and storing away.

    4. IDEA: Can I use the hot water, also, to soak a towel and use that on my face.? I tried it once, but it was very hot, so I need to workshop that... Does anybody use the hot water from the hot pot to heat a towel?

Also: Since there is no OFF / ON switch for my hot pot I bought a cheap switch at Lowe's Hardware and simply screwed in on inline... Viola!

Nice work...One thing I have been doing recently is after everything reaches the nice warm temperature, I just unplug the Hot Pot from the source...water inside remains warm/hot for quite a long time.

    Your contraption works too

    Default not a scuttle, then.

I guess I should correct my term, 'my scuttle', since I was given a 99 cent plastic coffee mug which doubles as a place to mix my lather. It's much lighter than clay, holds heat as well, and can't chip... I've found a winner.

Sorry purists, but if it works, it works.

I use a tin shaving cups with the insert as I find the tin transfers the heat from the water to the lather and the brush alot more efficiently than pottery. The hot water out of my taps is very hot and to help keep it at temperature, I sit the tin cup on one of those USB cup heating elements (I've got a USB / wall plug adaptor). I find that set up works really well. It's winter here in Australia at the moment and the mornings can be quite chilly here in Melbourne. It's great to look forward to some warm lather to spread on the face.

I've posted about this before. I use a small potpourri crock pot with the old style SRD scuttle. The scuttle sort of looks like a flower pot. It's fits perfectly in the crock, like a double boiler. It's probably smaller than any scuttle on the market, and keeps lather toasty warm throughout your shave. You do need to be proactive, and unplug it. It can get too hot and cook your lather. That's a small price to pay for nice warm lather...
I had a pic, but must have deleted it. if anyone want's to see, Pm me and I'll take another. Instead, here's a cool pic of my Night Blooming Cactus. It only blooms once a year and at night. I call it Medusa.....Cool....!

    Default Blooming Cool...

There's something so cool about a plant that only blooms once in a while... kind of rewarding for being patient and taking care of it!

    Robert,
My wife ordered the Sunbeam thingy for me 10 minutes after I showed her your post on it. I had it in a couple days, and my shaving has gone to another level. What a treat to have hot lather for my standard two shave routine.
I do find that unplugging it after the shower is best. Otherwise the lather cooks down.
Great innovation. Using a soup cooker for shaving. Thanks.

That's my lather after I forget about it for 2 days

    Hi Ed,
Ain't that something? they're awesome...for $12, you really have nothing to lose. Glad it worked out and you like it. There's something to be said about warm lather.

Now, have you tried warm überlather with this thing yet? If not, give it a shot and let me know how you like it.

    Default not wasting water...

Another benefit of the Rival/Sunbeam is that it 1. saves water 2. saves energy costs.

My upstairs bathroom takes about 1/2 gallon each morning of water to heat the pipes first, then to heat my face... with the hot pot, I get boiling water (if I want) in about 2 minutes and for about 5 cups of water.... saves me money, conserves water, and gets hotter water than I could get from my tap.

    off my soap box now.
