Now, have you tried warm überlather with this thing yet? If not, give it a shot and let me know how you like it.
    Robert,
No offense intended toward your 'Uberlather', but I use our own CarrieM's shaving soaps. She has great scents, and I believe, unrivalled product. As well, she has made me a custom scent,'Sassafras', and I have been unable to use another.
But it's best not to rule out possibilities!

None taken...In fact, I use CarrieM's cremes alone for superlather and in combination with soaps and glycerin to make uberlather.

She has awesome cremes...I haven't tried the sassafras though

Oh, I see! Well I could try to add glycerin and see what 'uberlather' is all about. Knowing my penchant for procrastination it could be a while before I get some. Until then, pure CarrieM sassafras and dragons blood.

Then about 1.5 months ago, I stumbled onto the solution

The "Sunbeam Hot Pot Express" (see picture below):

This thing offered many advantages (at least to me):

    1. Cheap - $10-$12 at Target. Can't go wrong
    2. Keeps water warm and has variable temperature control
    3. I can put my mug/brush inside and fill both mug and pot with water and heat while I take my shower...I will have nice warm brush in under 3 minutes
    4. I can build lather and put it back in the pot...the warm water in pot will keep the lather warm during each pass.

It is plain AWESOME ...and consistent temperatures all through my shaves, every time. Now, I love my lather even more.

Anyone else tried this?...If so, do share your experiences...good, bad and ugly

PS: I am sure that I have seen a video of someone (not sure if it was Joel or maybe I saw it on YouTube) using this technique too some time ago.
Really good stuff. Could be a bit bigger though.

I used one of those variable temp. things that I picked up from Target as well for a couple of years. It worked very well. However, I hated having that thing in my bathroom where I store all of my razors, brushes, creams, soaps, etc, etc, that take up a good deal of room...and my old lady hated having it in the bathroom, since I often left it out! LOL. Not that it's a big item, it's just rather ugly and my girl is an interior designer. Thus, she prefers seeing the pretty scuttles and handmade mugs left out!

I had a nice looking handmade scuttle (one I had bought online for pretty cheap) that worked somewhat well and would keep my lather hot for 10 minutes roughly. However, I had the same desire to keep the water/lather consistently hot longer without having to mess around with adding more hot water right during the middle of a shave.

Life became fortuitously easy when I met a local artisan that does amazing custom ceramic work...I showed her my favorite scuttle, and she crafted me one to try and solve this particular issue. I don't know what she did exactly, but my new scuttle is thicker and heavier than most, and must have a ton of layers of glaze on it! It keeps the water and lather consistently hot for well over 20-25 minutes--plenty of time for me to shave. Even on the weekends when I take a little more time to shave and enjoy my routine, the lather stays wonderfully hot.

This was not a cheap scuttle--I think it was $85 or more, if I recall correctly--but it was worth every penny since I will certainly keep it for a lifetime. Plus it is gorgeous and something rather special to add to my vast shaving collection. So, if you take the time and effort to find a talented artisan who can make you a high quality custom scuttle, you may be surprised by the difference in quality vs. a cheap scuttle you might find online.

Ultimately, though, the Target special is always a cheap and surefire way to keep one's lather hot for eternity! LOL! Have a good weekend, Friends!

    Default Sounds Awesome

Any method to keep the lather warm seems appealing to me, however, I use the soaps in the wooden bowls.

Anyone have ideas on how to keep that warm?

I take mine out, use it and store it under the cabinet...out of sight, out of mind, no clutter .

I use soaps too (in combination with cremes + glycerin) to make überlather. I don't know what you do, but I add a few drops os water (or use a wet brush) to the soap and swirl with the brush. Once my brush is properly loaded with the soap, I take it to the bowl and do my lathering in there with the creme etc...it still remains warm. I don't worry about the soap bowl at all.

So, if you use the soap alone , I reckon you can do the same thing - i.e., load the brush with soap and take it to the bowl...unless you face lather, which will make the whole exercise of keeping lather warm a moot point.
