What exactly is a "Hot Bowl" Do you heat it in the microwave...?

For lack of better terminology, I used the "hot bowl" title for this application based on a you tube video I watched.

What I find works well is to submerge it into a sink of hot water then shower. Once out of the shower she's ready to go. I've tried filling it with boiling water from the stove but that's far too hot, the lather dries out and gets cooked.
