I just scored this American Razor:
Looks like it'll clean right up (and get new scales)

yes the copper lifts VERY quickly from the zinc pennies. 1982 is the last year of copper pennies. Easy to find, and the only way i'd do it, as I've dug many zinc pennies from the ground and they always look like they've been dipped in acid before hitting the dirt. I recommend keeping that spacer oiled/waxed and dry.

Looks like a great blade! What is that, a 7/8?

Yes, gotta love those cleavers, so much character, the heft of them almost does all the shaving.
Great blade Wade...let us see it cleaned up with the new scales. What are you thinking of doing in terms of scales?

Well, i'm real keen on the translucent horn we keep seeing 'round these parts, but as i'm a novice scaler-with piles of interesting wood. I expect to use wood with curly maple remnants from longrifle build, or bodock, or fatwood. I may work all three woods down (i have scaled knives in bodock, and the maple is nearly ready) and test fit and see what looks mostest striking and hefts properly.
I like the idea of metal spacers, can play with the balance that way. Maybe i double-pin the spacer?
I've got to step away from the buying table, except for screaming deals. I put more into that one that the previous 3 combined, but that I already have a 7/8 that I really dig,
so here we are.

Yes, I'm getting a little more picky now in what I will buy. As much as there are tons of blades out there I like, I want to make sure I have blades that will be used a reasonable amount, and with 20 razors now, of which all of them I like and use, it's getting to be a bit of a large rotation, and I don't want blades to just hang out in the cigar box.
So if it's going to be a nice WB 7/8th, for me, that would be a blade I would definitely count on using frequently, so IMO, it's worth the extra coin.
Looking forward to seeing what you decide on in terms of scales. I've heard wood has a tendency to lose it's shape over time, but I'm certainly no expert on this, person who does my blades mentioned that to me.

I wouldn't think that if the wood was properly seasoned and dried completely then sealed that it would lose its shape...I have an F. Fenney that has been rescaled probably a century or more ago that is still straight as an arrow....whereas I have seen countless warped horn and celluloid etc as I am sure most of you have. Wood doesn't like water much though so sealing it seems to be key.

7/8 American Eagle W&B from the lot of 5 I purchased from the antique store the other day....little more polishing to do but staying away from buffer after the disasterand Lowes didn't have any 3k wet/dry in stock the other day.
Figure its worth adding to the butcher shop though!
The etching is very very deep
