Jamie, these scales just about sum up my journey with straight razors.

Currently I work with wood and am experimenting with properly stabilised woods. The Jade ghost is a reminder of the first razor I had refurbished by Max in the same material. The Abalone is something I just had to try working with - I learned lots and, as I suspected, the razor sold very quickly because of it's looks. However, the blades are all superb shavers.

Here's my JMP #14, only used it a couple of times, one of the longest blades I've encountered, and has a huge heft/weight to it, weighs as much as a big 9/8 wedge, it's a #14, 7/8, maybe I'll bring it out again, been awhile since this blade saw any MDC.

Nice additions to this topic to give us an even wider "14-base" for comparisons and trend spotting.

Yes, as you and Pixel mentioned, what exactly does the #14 mean? I thought they were supposed to be Filarmonica's only...but it seems there's a wide variety of blades...so I guess the question is, is there something in common about these blades other than the #14?

Razor numbering has always been a conundrum to me,In the case of filis we have 12/13/14,only diff is blade size.
Some have reported origeonal 14s with 6/8 blades,all 14 Palmeras are 7/8 to over 8/8.
Have to think it has to do with blade size,Dunno

Old legend about one maker producing #14 blanks for several makers to finish. (Guillermo Hoppe?)
Most #14's have similar size, shape. Some are remarkably same, it seems. I dunno. Other side of coin is merchandising.
As one maker scored a fine success with #14 big blades, others followed suit. Sort of like 'barber's use' in older blades.

Interesting, so there is potentially no relation between a Filly #14 and a Palmera #14? Strange, I thought most Filly #14's were 8/8 while the #13's were 7/8. The #13 I have is a 7/8, while the #14 JMP I have is also a 7/8 ???, but a wildly different blade, I'd say 1/4 inch longer, spine much thicker, and weighs about three times the #13...sheesh...never a lack of interesting surprises in the razor world!

From my experience as a general rule of thumb, No.14 blades are usually 8/8 width from blade edge to spine.

That is true with Filarmonicas with the a technical exception with their Medallion series of razors while having 8/8 width (edge to spine) have the box marked as 7/8, which comes from using a different width measurement that does not include the spine.




I have come across exceptions. For example:-

I believe the tale usually refers to Henckenrath as the maker of those blanks.
A theory I have little to no faith in.

Interesting bonitomio, couple of posts up, you can see the photo of my clearly marked #14 JMP Filarmonica...and it's a 7/8...that's what confuses me!!

I think Birnando, whose post is above mine, nails it, "variations simply to big.."
