Thread: Looking for Ivory scales

With all the current restrictions I fear I might be wasting my time. I have a MK 32 that I would like to put Ivory scales on. I'm having trouble finding vintage scales and I'm not keen on the idea of using modern ivory unless it's a trusted source. Any ideas?

Why not use bone of some description?

You'd think there would be at least some old ivory scales on rusted out or heavily gapped razors. But, like brother scag above, I haven't found any. All the ivory scaled razors I own are in pretty good condition. It might be time to investigate the modern substitutes and make new scales and pin them up to resemble the 19thC style.

People that still have legal Ivory are not selling anymore,all these new restrictions have done is raised the price making it a very rare hard to get item.

They are out there. I bought this one a couple months ago, for $2 at an Antique Flea Market.

Be aware that there's a lot of new ivory being sold as old ivory. It may be tempting but please know that most of the new ivory being poached these days buys arms for terrorist organizations. No BS. I have worked on known old stuff but I'm not really interested in owning it.

Camel bone is a good substitute. It does not have the holes in it like many other bone does. There is also synthetics, which are getting better at looking like ivory. I did look for quite some time to find the right ivory scales for replacements on a couple for my seven day set. Keep looking. Don't restrict yourself to Ebay in the US either. Ebay UK has better deals on razors and shipping is fast and inexpensive.

Camel bone should be a good substitute. Lots of it about and not expensive.

Good ivory scales are hard to come by these days. I also recommend camel bone as a substitute for ivory scales.
