I think in time gold plating will eventually wear off a bit. That will be amplified if honed without tape if the gold is on the spine or one uses an mild abrasive polish a lot to get rid of oxidation stains. But that goes along with the territory unfortunately here.

If he likes wood best over horn scales then you can find a lot out there. Once again, PRC has quite a variety of woods they use. I only sing their praises because they make fine razors.

The Jerry Starks and Bell and Hat have wood scales but they usually go near or north of your top budget. Most of their south of $300 are micarta scales which is a resin type scale it appears. Never had a micarta scaled blade so I cannot comment.

Wood is nice. I have a Dovo with yew wood scales and it is nice. I tend to favor horn scales myself or some of the more exotic woods or hard to get wood like a nice spalted maple or burl with great grain patterns.

You have time to decide.....unless you go with PRC. They have a 11-12 week turn around right now so you would have to decide I would suspect by beginning of October and have your order in. May do to call as well to make sure since it would be a Christmas present if they can do it in that time frame.

But either way or however you go, it will be a hit!

If you want a 'fancy handle' you may not want to choose wood, any wood. I love wood, just not for razor scales. Horn, bone, mother of pearl...these are the acceptable natural classics for straight razors. Of course, this is just an opinion...as are all of these posts. Happy Searching!

Just curious, what's so 'shoddy' about this restoration? I like it.

5/8 and sort of smiling just a tad! He will love what ever. But a 6/8 will be a great upgrade I assure you.
