I'm going with option 3: the retailer didn't open it and check before sending out.

Since Rasoir Sabre claims to make razors shave ready from the factory (fully honed, finished on a coticule, and stropped on leather), I suspect Classic Shaving did not break open the coffin case to inspect it. Mine did come shave ready, I did not even have to strop it, but the one received by jeffus definitely was not. Considering the high quality of the razor I received, I was quite surprised when I saw the photos of the razor received by jeffus. I will try to take some photos of mine and post them for comparison.

I am glad that Classic Shaving is standing behind the products they sell. Although jeffus could have fixed his razor, he should not have had to do so. Let's hope the replacement is a true keeper.

Classic Shaving seems to understand what their role in this transaction is, and they are acting on it. No straight is that big a bargain to put up with the sloppy work. Put a spur in Dave and Classic Shaving so you can give them a well earned atta boy when this is resolved.

Classic Shaving is now part of The Grooming Network, the same company that owns The Blades Grim and several other formerly independent companies. All TGN shipments come from a fullfillment center in Sandpoint, ID. I don't know if this will affect the CS customer service policies.
I doubt that Classic Shaving ever touched the product.

Hmmmm....looks to me like he's making cheap quality razors from GD blanks. If so, he's raking in some bucks. I hope the whole story is unfolded soon...

According to the information from both the Classic Shaving and rasurpur.de web sites, the 7/8" Rasoir Sabre Le Grelot Wings blades were ground from historical Le Grelot blanks forged by Mazelier. It appears Thiers Issard consumed the 5/8 and 6/8 blanks they got when they purchased the assets of Le Grelot/Welcome. Although TI does make some 7/8" razors, their focus is on narrower widths. According to Ertan Suer (JAWS on SRP), when TI allowed the Le Grelot trademark registration to expire, he registered the trademark in 2015. He then obtained the few remaining (apparently fewer than 100) 7/8" Le Grelot blanks. Apparently, I got one of the last razors available as neither Rasurpur.de or Classic Shaving show the 7/8" wings razor as available at this time.

Rasoir Sabre never claimed to make 5/8" or 6/8" razors from historical Le Grelot blanks. Those razors were made either from new blanks forged in Solingen or Thiers. You can still get the 5/8" Le Grelot Sparkle razors, but the description indicates they are made from Solingen blanks.

I have several Gold Dollar blades that I purchased to develop my honing skills. All the GD razors I have seen are 6/8". I have not seen either a 5/8" or 7/8" Gold Dollar or Gold Monkey razor.

The cost of the basic steel blank represents only a small portion of the overall cost of a razor. It is the heat treatment, grinding, polishing, scale fitting, etc. that comprise the greatest portion of the razor manufacturing cost. Then you have to add the sales, marketing and distribution costs to the manufacturing cost to arrive at the total cost. Even if you started with an inexpensive Chinese forging, you could still end up with a high quality razor if you put expert craftsmanship into the processing of that blank. The Gold Dollar razors as offered for sale lack in the craftsmanship aspect.

I think he may have been talking about, forgive me if I read him wrong, the BOG Tactical razor that they are now selling. Here again I am assuming that Classic Shaving is trying to be the sales outlet for razor manufacturers. Through trial and error they will eventually learn who to do business with, and who to avoid. A work in progress. As long as they continue to give good customer service, I'm good.

Besides the custom guys, I would stick to Revisor and Ralf Aust. I have a Boker and a few TIs. But the RA and Revisors seem to deliver the best quality.
