My Dovo Spanish point taught me the importance of razor - ear awareness... yes I did nick my earlobe 3 times with the Spanish point you just have to take it easy around the ears. The Gryphon square point is easier than the Spanish point, but it's something that you have to get a feel for. I start the shave by slowly cutting in short strokes a little outline around my ear...

I must admit that razor looks beautiful.

I used to believe I needed large blades but now I covet the small ones....ok and still the big ones

Think of it simply as increasing the overall challenge of straight shaving. By no means should you be paranoid. But, if you find the tip continues to bite, you can easily blunt the end a bit to save your precious blood supply.
I got my first square point from Nate's Straights and I did nick my ear the first time out. After that as you say you quickly come to respect the point and are much more aware of it. Now it is one of my favourite razors. At first I said that I would round off the point, but I never have and I think that little bit of extra care required helps my shave enormously.

Your Gryphon is a great looking razor. I have looked at PRC, but Her Royal Highness' Customs took a wedge of cash off me for my Nate's Straight, so I have not ordered another razor from the US since. Maybe I need to revisit that soon.

Not sure if anyone else has the same experience but I find the Spanish point very useful on trimming nose hairs. The dovo's point is just the perfect size for doing a little trim around the inner rim of the nostrils. Haven't tried the square point but I doubt it will work. So I guess the Dovo will have to stay in the regular rotation on nose duty. I also shave my head with a straight, and there it's good to have a rounded razor... don't want any surprises when shaving on the blind side of your head!

I have a Red Imp #133 square point that will slice a ear or what ever & you won't even feel it!

Thanks for the write up. I've been looking at Portland and Brain Brown for a while.
Some time in the near future one of the two will be mine!
    Keep it safe and Cheers,

    Thanks for the post Tenurepro!

I just placed an order for a Gryphon a couple of days ago, but I'm going back and forth on the size. How're you feeling about that 8/8? Are you digging it or are you wishing you would have gone 7/8?

I like the 8/8. I don't have a 7/8 so don't have a good basis for comparison. The ergonomics of the 8/8 Gryphon work for me so no regrets...

Been shaving with the razor consistently for the past week... haven't touch anything else! I think I must have dulled the edge a bit from stropping or overuse... it still shaves great, but not the same experience that I had on the first shave. Thinking of taking it to the naniwa 12k for a few laps

Glad you're digging it!! I'm thinking I might go 7/8th on the Gryphon and in the future pick up an 8/8 phoenix.

Somehow, I don't see an error in judgement on the horizon. Two terrific choices from a quality vendor. Enjoy!
