Thanked: 10Anychance I could Get A critique, Feedback On This Restore Please?
I'm looking for an honest, critique and or opinions on what I did wrong, how to improve the things I did do wrong? What to do to correct any mistakes etc. Any comments and advice would be very helpful and give me an idea what to do correctly in the future. Not fishing for pats on the back, just some feedback to help me along.
Thanks Folks. Moderator if this is a double post (I don't think it is) please advise.
Thank you

Overall, your restoration looks really good. The only critiques I would have are very small. Your scales look a little thick and one seems a little thicker than the other. Overall, the blade looks pretty nice, kept the stamps sharp which is one of the issues usually mucked up when using a wheel to polish off rust.

Thanked: 104As a matter of taste, I would have went with stainless steel or silver pins and washers. I think those get lost in the butterscotch colored scales. You did a great job with the blade though, and I would be proud to use that razor.

Thanked: 10Thank you. I shaved with it this morning: not a great or even a good shave but I managed to scrape the hair off my face. I will take it back to the hones later today.
MrZ, I actually debated using stainless pins and washers when I was at that point.
Many thanks

Thanked: 634Only critique I have is the pins should be rounded over a little more. Looks like you could catch your finger on them. I have a tack hammer I use as an anvil. I drilled a small dimple on one side for regular pins and a bigger one on other side for domed washers.

only critique i would have would be the washers. In my opinion the washers from micro fasteners look better with the edges rounded. (the little details make all the difference to me). Sure, one could buy the authentic ones (which are really nice) or if your cheap like me do with what i have. Here's how i do it.

Looking at the wedge end it looks like the blade could center a little better and the wedge could be a little more precise. As bouschie said the pins could be domed a little more. A small ball peen (ball end) tapping lighty in a circle around the pin will dome it nicely. DON'T TAP TOO HARD though. The pins will bend if you do. It just takes some time and patience. Tap lightly more times rather than harder. Personally I like the brass but it will look even better with them more domed. Like bouschie mentioned with the anvil I have a steel block with dimples drilled in it to rest the other end of the pin in. The scales have some blemishes as you mentioned in the original post. Oh well, that happens. You might be able to repair those with some epoxy or something. I'm not experienced enough in that to give tips. The blade looks really good though. Find nothing wrong with that. You did a good job. You can always go back to it. I have restores I have gone back to multiple times. Our technical skills gets better with time. Over all I think it is very good though. If it were me I might just hone it up and shave with it the way it is.
Edit: There's a thread somewhere (I think Marty [Euclid 440] posted one) about getting a blade to center without taking it apart. There is probably more than one. At the end of the day though unless the edge catches on the scale it's not as critical.Last edited by PaulFLUS; 04-13-2020 at 09:31 PM.

Thanked: 4826Making crooked scales for a crooked razor is tricky but can be done. The most simple methods is to make the bearing surface of the pivot area crooked.
If you back light horn slabs you can see the imperfections.
You can fill the imperfections that surprise you, by using CA.It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!
