    Default The $30,000 Straight Razor

Seen this morning in The New York Times Men's Style Magazine page 124.

Title: Now Coveting - The Straight Razor

Gas is reaching heights of $4 a gallon, the Dow is on a roller coaster, and the housing market is as anemic as a runway model. In other words, what better time to drop $30,000 on a straight razor? In November, Hommage is introducing the limited- edition Damascene, conceived by Wolfgang Joensson, an industrial and product designer who co-founded the company after stints at renowned shops like Pentagram and frog design. The blade, made of pure Damascene steel, a hot-forged metal that is legendary for its strength, has a pedigree stretching back nearly a dozen centuries to ancient sword makers. A platinum plated sheath houses the blade when its not in use, and each of the 15 razors in the first edition comes with a certificate of authenticity. For the shaving cream, you're on your own.

Do you think the company would be open to a group buy?

Why on earth would I like to have a platinum plated thing for my straight and pay what was my annual salary for it -I assume this is why the price is so high, 'cause you can buy a wonderful blade made of Damascene steel for around 800 bucks (see Zowanda, Livi, etc).

But I think they'll always find rich people to buy the thing and put it in a display window

    It's ugly.

    And a ridiculous rip off.

I wonder how some people sleep at night.

You guys with this negative talk are giving me a serious case of buyers remorse. That, with the old lady bitching the tent isn't big enough for all my other junk is really making me regret this decision. Now I find the return policy is not very buyer friendly. =this is going to be a long day

I'm a little curious about this razor. It's ugly, that's for sure. So much so it needs to be taken out back and shot. Still, I wouldn't mind trying to shave with it. It also inspires me ask a question:

Are there any other razors 'reverse weighted' like this, where the scales are dramatically heavier than the blade? I'm only assuming this because (and this was already mentioned) platinum is so damn heavy.

Platinum is around $1000 to $1500 per ounce, and there's no way that thing weighs even 8 ounces (half a pound) because if it does, it's an ugly, overpriced, and poorly designed razor.

So the most that it could be worth is ~10k
