Ahh, that makes total sense, a no name Solingen. Could still be a very nice razor.

The razor that I bought from the SRP member (which Ross Cutlery indicated could not be sharpened) is in my drawer at home. The SRP member that sold me the razor continues to be very responsive to PM's, which makes me want all the more for it to be of good quality.

Thus far, it sounds like the feedback from this thread is that it is a Double Arrow. There have been some comments on this thread indicating that the razor cannot be sharpened (at least not sharpened cost effectively). The SRP member that sold me this razor continues to stand by his product, which is very admirable (that is, assuming that the razor is not junk and can in fact be sharpened). I removed his name (please don't ask for it, this is razor hunt not a which hunt!), and have included his latest PM below:

I guarantee the razor. Send it back to me and I will hone it and return it to you and I will pay the return shipping. To ensure that you are getting the same razor returned to you, please mark it somehow. If you are not satisfied when it comes back to you, I will gladly refund your purchase of the razor and shipping.
I am shipping the razor back to him tomorrow, and I am optimistic about the outcome. I must say, the fact that the seller offered to refund my purchase price if I am not satisfied after the next sharpening lends a lot of credibility to this seller. I don't imagine someone selling junk would make that offer, so again I am optimistic about things working out. All in all, another testament to the quality of the SRP forum, and of its members.

QUESTION: Once this razor is sharpened again by the seller, how can I assess whether it is shave ready and of decent quality? I have already had Ross Cutlery provide their opinion, so ideally I would like to get a second opinion from a knowledgeable, independent 3rd party. Any suggestions for how I can assess whether it is shave ready and of decent quality?

Hi bud , when you first received the DA from the srp member did you strop the razor at all ?

If you had strop before use theres a small chance your stropping technique may have sufficeintly dulled the edge of the razor ?

fwiw : Ross Cutlery have been spoke in high regard on the forums for as long as I've been here.

Hope your shaking start hasn't dampened your enthusiasm ..

    all the best Garry

    Default Wow!!!

I have been away TOO long! Let me tell you, I WAS AT Ross Cutlery on Aug 9th ... we went to LA as my better half wanted to go to Disneyland for her birthday.

If anyone was wondering, Ross Cutlery is where I bought my twin Fili's I posted not to long ago under "look what the stork delivered". I called them on a WEIRD thread I found online, and he explained what they have as far as straight razors go. I ordered them and got them with the BEST service you can ask for.

Anyway, I found them in downtown LA on my way to Anaheim, and bought a new C-Mon Cadallac razor, and I must say the have THE MOST razors I have found from ANY source I can walk into and put my hands on. The service is also GREAT.

They have a full case of new, vintage and restored razors, all at GREAT PRICES to pick from. I have photos I will post of the shop and the razor case.

Anyone, please, please, please give this place some buisness. They are great men doing what they love, and straight razors and accessories is part of that buisness. They have a stunning store filled with enough cutlery to make Edward Scissor hands jealous!!!

Anyway, the ambien just hit me, so I need to go to sleep. I will post pictures of the shop later.

I think Ross cutlery got a bad rap in this thread .... I only hope people will give them a chance beacause they have a great store in an intresting area in L.A.

Sounds like you're receiving good service on all sides. The best way to asses a razor's shave readiness is the shave test. If the selling member is confident that it can be brought back there's no reason to disbelieve him. We're only judging on pictures which don't tell the whole story. Good luck and don't let the shaky start dampen your enthusiasm.

    Default Crazy train

I just wanted to make sure people know this is an honest shop with caring owners and employees. This thread had people ready to condem them without knowing all the facts in this matter ....

I think you need to get ALL SIDES of the story before passing judgment as some did earlier on this thread.

    Default Real or fake

What you have is a DA. They are generally good- I have several bought online and honed. You can occasionally get a bad one as I have. I have 5 good and 1 bad. If the seller sends it back, it is likely shave ready- test it before your strop it as it will likely be ready to use. Invert the razor with edge side up and hold it in your left hand. Take a hair, grip it between two fingers leaving about an inch exposed, bring the hair down across the blade, if it slices directly through the hair (it might "ping"), then it is ok. Test this on several locations along the blade edge.
The SRP sellers usually stand behind what they sell.
    Good luck
