Here's a pick me up story- I found two NOS solingens for $35, shipped. One of them is my best shaver. Neither turns up in searches here or even on google.

Thanked: 2591My weirdest buy, was supposedly Geo Westenholm & Sons, which when I cleaned it did not have anything stamped on the blade or shank, only the box was Geo.
The razor honed nicely though, and who knows for $7 with shipping it might turn out to be a decent buy.Stefan

I only bid on totals I'm happy with. If the total w/shippng is around $20 for a clean blade I'll bit, not much more, I win around 1 a month and thats fine with me. A few times I'll push the bid higher if I really like the razor, but I still only bid low as I'm more of a see in hand to spend the $$ person. I'd spend more in a shop where I can see and touch the razor then one off ebite.

I have a book about straight razor collecting. It gives approximate collector value. That value is based on brand, scale material and scale artwork. There is no consideration for the blade or it's condition. Apparently, folks that just collect them (and not shave with them) don't give a hoot about the blade condition or it's shave-ability.
BTW, while I sympathize, complaining about ebay is like complaining about the weather.

Thanked: 953I think ebay is great - without it I'd never be able to find old razor at any price. And you can do fine if you know what you are looking for, track items, and wait till you get a good price. You can also do really well if you go after razors that are great but not hyped at the moment.
I got a perfect Robeson Nubak for $5 for example - they guy took a bad picture so it looked filthy, but literally just needed to be swiped. And you can get very nice american blades under $30. And you can often get a good deal on a lesser known solingen in mint condition if you are patient. And sometimes you just get lucky: I got an untouched puma for $50 last year, and a pretty darn good condition goldedge for $50.
So I see it as an opportunity to browse a huge variety of razors. what I'm willing to pay is up to me, and good deals come if you look hard and don't just chase hype.
Now I've been disappointed with a few buys to be sure, but that's the game I guess.

ChayesFSS, it's too late now! Denton isn't far. I'll drive there now, and buy them out from under you! Thanks for the heads up.
