I got a Tosuke razor in a trade, and I have some quesions that are bothering me. The omote side is totally wedge shaped, it doesn't have hollowing, is this normal, or will this make any problems while honing? I don't know, but is seems like it was made this way. I suspect the razor was honed by some newbie, because the bevel on the ura side is about 1mm wide at the heel, and 2mm at the toe. Can this razor be honed to shave ready, or it needs some grinding? Can I/should I help to correct the problem with taping the spine so the bevel will be smaller? Thanks in advance for your help, I hope I can give new life to this razor, because it looks very nice, and I always wanted to try a kamisori

    A picture might help ....
but more importantly use a magic marker
to discover how the razor interacts with
    the hone.

Mark it with a color that is easy to see
and give the razor one hone stroke on
each side with a stone that is about 4K.
If the hone wipes the marker ink from
the bevel well with a light touch it does
not matter if the bevel is 1mm, 2mm or what ever.

+1 to what Tom already posted

Also keep in mind when buying Kamisori.. many people that own them probably should not, as many hone a double sided bevel into them

A pic of both sides would really help...

Thank you gents, I will make some pics of it. It doesn't look like it should, but maybe it can be made useable. I didn't pay too much for it, and I did know that the razor is not in perfect condition.

if it is flat it might be possible to fix it.

Thanks for the link, I already saw that thread. I was thinking about making one of these myself. Only the very edge of the omote is high carbon steel right? So I could file away the soft steel, and make it hollow again.

I found this article about it, it looks promising:
    Eastern Smooth: Kamisori

technically yes that is what should happen, but I am not sure if it is easy thing to do.

I suspect it won't be the esiest thing to do, but I have a little experience in metal work, so I hope I will be able to repair it. Judging from the pics, the heavy part for me will be the making of a sen
