Thread: Ideas for a rescale?

Give Max, Glen or Brad a holler...they do wonders with scales.
BTW: I think the inlay can be saved...they usually do an acetone removal to get it off. I think it's worth saving and transferring.
As far as scales, this thing will look great in either butterscotch micarta, burgundy linen micarta, faux ivory or even G10 jade Ghost. The design of the scales will be important. With this razor, you would want the scale to accentuate the blade and not be the center of attraction...keep it simple. it'll be a thing of beauty

You reckon replicate the gunstock, or just plain ol scale shape?
Its not that I'm indecisive, I lack experience or previous interest in rescales being a fan of originals, and appreciate your opinions.
Regards

Thanked: 953I'd keep those original scales. They are original and very cool. Just be sure to use nancy boy shaving creams so the scales feel at home (just kidding!).
But seriously, those look functional and historical and kind of groovy. I'd totally enjoy them in their original habitat.

After speaking to one of the restoration gurus, I have obtained a quotation for the work. He also told me that it is unlikely that the scales were specifically designed for that razor - they were just 'thrown' on so to speak. I think Im going to send an 8/8 out to be scaled instead - this one I'm going to find some original 'Solingen' scales for as a replacement I think.
It seems like the most sensible option.

Thanked: 16My vote is to keep the original shape. Those old shapes are classic for a reason. Also, if you want to consider wood scales, take a look at the video on using epoxy as a finish.

Received the razor and it shaves very nicely. The scales aren't as bad as I thought, but they were not made for this razor as Max advised they were probably 'thrown' on.
I can see this as the inner side of the wedge has been filed down, possibly with a round file while the scales were pinned, in order to accomodate the blade. I have never seen such detail on a Solingen razor before, which makes me believe these were retro fitted.

Okay, I want to clarify for you that although they were "thrown on" those are the original scales. Max was saying that those are old stock scales, something that once upon a time sat in boxes by the thousands in Solingen.. not at all that they are custom, or retrofitted, or any other rationalization you might choose for ruining an irreplaceable NOS setup.

I understand what you are saying, although these scales were not designed for that particular razor. Blades and scales were likely sitting in boxes as old stock and these happened to be fitted - why these? Perhaps the integral casing compensated for lack of original boxes.
They are only original in the sense that they were the first scales that were pinned to the razor. Had the peener stuck a pair of Dovo's scales on the razor, then by that token those would also be the originals.
This is not a NOS set up, rather this is a drunken vegas style wedding of a NOS blade and separate NOS scales.
It is a bodge fit to say the least. No Solingen maker from back in the day would have let quality at that standard hit the market. That wedge is simply not acceptable!Last edited by Scipio; 08-07-2010 at 11:14 PM.

What more than "the scales put on buy the manufacturer" could you ask as "original?"
As for the wedge more likely is that over time the celluloid shrank-- as it tends to do-- and more room was added by an owner to the wedge end so the tip would clear.
It isn't a moral failing to rescale a razor. What is silly is to waste other people's time trying to get support for your own preconceived notions.
If you want to rescale it-- as it is clear you do-- don't say things like you are "a fan of originals" or make a thread like this to waste all our time to clear your conscience. You knew what you wanted; you just made a thread for all your rationalizations so you could see them in print.
Go ahead. Rescale away.
