Thanked: 14boiling water does increase the rate at which rust forms.
also likely that it wasn't pure water, but somekind of mix of water and vinegar or bleach.
if there's any silver in that blade's steel, that's going to tarnish it like there's no tomorrow within minutes!

I did not read all the post, so this may have been said If the razor was touching the bottom of the pot the heat transfer would go straight to the Str8. Boiling a Str8 is just a bad idea altogether. I would add it to the Wiki if its not there already.

Thanked: 9There's definitely more to this than leaving it in water. Was it left in water? Maybe, but that's tough to tell. Regardless, leaving a carbon steel razor in water for a long period of time would be rust city. The messed up bevel would be a different tale entirely. As others have posted, I'd say the razor was tampered with, either with a dremel/buffer, or it's been dropped.
I would NOT give a refund, as this was all done after it left your possession. The best thing about SRP is that it's a gathering place for GREAT people. The worst thing about SRP is that it is a gathering place for GREAT people. LOL. You're being too nice to someone who destroyed a razor themselves, and expects you to pay for it.

It would seem to me that the owner of this razor made a mistake, tried to fix it(mistake), tried to decieve you as to what happened(mistake), and would allow you to compensate him for all of his mistakes(mistake again!). I would hope he would fess up and learn from his many mistakes! No one needs this type of customer, Neil. Especially someone of your integrity.
JMHO...........Tom"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

Thanked: 199Why the guy would leave his razor sitting in water is beyond me...
If it were me, I would not only NOT give him a refund, but I would never do business with him again, and if he kept bothering me, I would threaten to sue him for harassment.
Or you could just send the razor back to him and tell him that the chips and discoloring will not affect the shave.
Some people don't deserve nice things...

Neil,
I can't see how this razor could have possibly been defective in this way and survived you rescaling and honing it.
There's no doubt in my mind that this guy screwed up the razor through a series of unfortunate decisions.
Business sense says "You bought it, you broke it. Not my problem."
That said, I think you should give him the refund. Is your life founded on the money of this razor purchase? I know it's not. And so, let this guy live with the choices he's made, and let you live with the knowledge that you have done beyond what is right.
