In that condition I would say it is possible that the scales are horn. Just that the dye is so dark it may not appear to be in photos. If they have a grain they are horn. One way or the other, great score.

the finish
Wullie suggested I take photos of the finish of the steel, for restorers to reference..This is the best I could do for now. Ill try more another time..I could only take shots of the Etched side because my camera needed the lettering to capture sharp focus..I tried to focus on the letters, and flip the blade around but it didnt work..Anyway, here they are...
