Now that you have moved up from a 5/8" Aust to a 6/8", why stop there?

I have an Aust 7/8" French point with horn scales.

It is a lot of fun playing with the big boys!

The thread has moved, but not sure about the OP I only have one Ralf Aust (the new one), but that is one hell of a razor.

I like 5/8 and 6/8 in general, but how do you like the 7/8? I was also thinking about the French point, but I generally find round points very manageable.

I would say my favorite is probably 13/16", Thus, I like both 6/8 and 7/8 very much. A 8/8 might be a little too big. I have a couple of vintage 5/8", but find that they are too light for me, even though one of them is a superb shaver. If you like a 6/8 better than a 5/8, then you will probably like a 7/8. If you like the 5/8 better than a 6/8, then you might not like the 7/8. I would not recommend a 7/8 for a noob, but after you have a few months of straight shaves, most people could handle a 7/8 without issue.

I have razors in a variety of point styles. My favorite is a Spanish point, followed by a French point. I do not have trouble shaving with any of them, even my Wostenholm that has a slight spike point. You just need to remember where the point is all the time, but that applies to a round point as well. Wacker has a French point that is very pronounced. I believe they call it an oblique point. I preferred the more subtle French point on the Ralf Aust.

Ralf Aust is indeed the best production razor out there. The 6/8 in grenadille is known (I think) as an American point. I have only seen it available directly from Herr Aust

I think I just fell in love. I've been stalking the buy sell trade forums here and everywhere else as well as browsing over a hundred pages on eBay looking for a vintage razor to start with untill I figure out what I want.

I'm done. I have several razors on my wish list at SRD and the RA Palisader 6/8. square is one of them. I was looking through the 5 or so razors I have on that list at SRD a bit ago and the looks and price of the Palisader caused me to give it some extra attention. That's how I ended up on this thread. That video sealed the deal for me. I'm skipping the vintage bigger razor and jumping in with both feet on that one. It's I guess you can say she's singing to me, promising to smoothly caress my face and make my forget how much I hate shaving.

@Lynn can I order the Palisader as it is in the video? Or do I need to order from Ralf directly?

That @ thing works on Facebook or instagram but I don't think it notifyies the individual on SRP. Lynn is on FB so give that a shot, or as Porl suggested, contact SRD. They are a brick and mortar so you can call and ask for Don.

I got through to Lynn with pm. I may be ordering direct as I'm looking for a slight custom build.

Someday I'm going to have to learn how to do tagging and hashtags, after I learn what they are.

Aust seems to favour Spanish points, but offers also round, square, and - on request - French points.

As far as the "American point' is concerned that was mentioned earlier in the thread, this is simply a literal translation of the German term "amerikanischer Kopf", which denotes nothing more than a square point.

He also offers a "Schorkopf", which I can best describe as a round point with the upper corner squared off.

The one type of Aust blade that I have somewhat lost the taste for is his shoulderless Bismarck blade.
They are beautiful to look at and are exceptional shavers, but the edges of the diamond shaped cross-section have a tendency to scratch the surface of the strop.
Aust did recently a 7-day set for me, and if it wasn't for that I would have ordered Bismarck blades, but in the end I stuck to Spanish points that work so well with the corners of my mustache.

Otherwise, Austs make the largest group of my razors now and I have come to believe that I can't really go wrong with an Aust.
