Greg, I believe they are some sort of light acrylic material. The Fili was rescaled, but the scales came from another razor of mine that was purchased on the classifieds. Hope that helps and thanks for the compliment!

Regarding lenses: it depends on too many factors. What kind of camera? what is the crop factor on it? Do you like to shoot landscape, closeups, portraits, etc? I have a Fuji S5pro (basically a Nikon D200) and I love Nikon's lenses, but they are $$. Sigma makes good ones for 1/2 the price, but you really have to have a keen eye to pick out the right one. I think I've been confused with someone else, but I appreciate the info anyway! I've looked at Sigma lenses before, but you're not the first to mention the iffy quality. I've got a Nikon D3100 and was looking for a good prime lens with a low apperture setting to allow more light into the photo for these SOTD shots. eTom has been kind enough to share some good advice via PM, and he's given me some ideas to consider.

As for the Jack Black line, I've really become a big fan. All of their products are formulated with natural ingredients, outperform expectations, and as a bonus they're based in Texas - I try to support local whenever and wherever possible.

I've had this razor for quite a while now, but have never had any luck honing it. I would work at it for a while, and give up when I couldn't get the bevel set. Yesterday, I took the day off work for a cold, and decided to give it another try. I'm usually not a spine taper, but figured that as much trouble as I was having with this one, it would be better not to wear the spine completely away... So, I tried a few different strokes that I learned from watching gssixgun/Glen's videos, and after a little time on the 1k, she was popping hair like crazy. Ran through the progression, 4k, 8k, 12k, diamond spray, stop. This morning I got a nice, comfortable, smooth shave from the little feller. All I can say is Thanks to all who share advice on this site!!

I really like Jack Black too. Great creme. I like the fact that it's unscented and can go with any soap out there.

Just out of curiosity Robert, have you ever tried an SE Razor?
They are really alot like shaving with a Near Wedge or Wedge
Straight Razor with a different holding technique. They actually
give you a DFS in a lesser amount of time. Pretty cool I think.
