It was first washed with some Vosene shampoo. I've just spent a good half-hour giving if the works, with Palmolive cream, Proraso soap, and Mitchell's Wool Fat, and am happy to say it performs well with these three. Also, as yet it's shed less than the Vulfix 404.
The Arko soap was bought from the same website, simply because I felt bad just buying the brush alone. Its scent is, er... unique, not as unpleasant as the stick of Erasmic I had to use once, but odd enough to warrant the soap being the first candidate for grating into a sealable container. If it weren't for the fact that it lathers up brilliantly, the stick would be languishing in the rubbish bin.
I have one of those brushes, i think they are brilliant, and when your Arko runs out, you will crave it, one of the best out there, and cheap. I quite like the smell now. Ironically, i shaved with a flare tip on Sunday, so we near had an identical shave.

The soap doesn't have an unpleasant scent. It'll end up being an acquired "taste", much like the Tabac scent was. The brush is still being tamed, but it's smell is getting under control.

    Wednesday

Razor | Wade and Butcher 5/8 Special | Überlather | Mike’s Natural Pine and Cedarwood/Musgo Real Orange Amber/Glycerine
After Shave | D.R.Harris Bay Rum

Very nice shave this morning. A post about W&B 5/8 Special razors on another thread here got me thinking about this razor and actually made me very much look forward to the morning’s shave. Like I said on the other thread, a lot of people seem to concentrate on the big chunky W&B wedges but these smaller ones are really nice. I DID have a big one once, but actually swapped it for this one as I didn’t like the big one. At that time I was new to straight shaving so was almost intimidated by the bigger razor. The Überlather was very oomphy.

Looking forward to a week’s holiday after this week, bouldering on Saturday and a family gathering on Sunday. Feeling outrageously fit and healthy at present, spiritually settled and happy with family life, but wondering in what direction the wind blows from North and South Korea. Also feeling the world financial system in on the verge of absolute collapse. Therefore, and for that reason, I shall buy a long bow shortly, as I need to defend myself during the pending zombie apocalypse. I’m thinking I’ll head to Deep Creek. The wife may have to be ‘let go’ unless we can make one of those Medieval litter things to carry her in. We may have to leave her behind with some good drugs, The Bible, the dogs and the shotgun, reserving one shell for herself and one each for the dogs. This may buy us some time as we head to Deep Creek Cove to start our band of partisans. I think we’ll go for old Australian army greens as the uniform with red berets. I’ll promote myself to Lord Emperor and Commander in Chief. We’ll hunt and fish and set booby traps and practice shooting flaming arrows into North Korean Zombie targets set up on the beach. Also, I shall set a small band to work making home brewed beer and planting coffee bushes. Each Saturday night we’ll have drunken orgies, but NO funny stuff.

PS, isn't it cool how the white of the photo melds with the page background, at least on my monitor?

Isn't that funny? I think the only good thing about Arko is the packaging. I dislike the 'hospital grade' smell and I don't think it's all that good as a lather, though for the small package simply rubbing it on one's face can generate a reasonable lather. I used all mine up by using it as a shampoo...It also seems to be chocka-block full of chemicals. Different strokes for different folks though...

    True words, calm distinct.
I think the same way. The smell reminds me of washrooms in the army. "Hospital grade" smell hits it very accurate.

That's a REALLY cool looking razor. Love that patina.I Googled Opinel razors and one of the first things that came up was this page on the knifes. I had one of these YEARS ago and really liked it, you can get them easily here. French, aren't they? I found as link where someone was talking about shaving with one (the wooden handled knife). Now THAT would be a challenge for my honing skills!

I haven't yet found too many razor links but I've only just started looking. I think you may have sparked my New Razor Search for 2013.

I'm also excited about the post re. the shaving with the Opinel wooden handled knife idea. I might get one this weekend and see how I go making it shave ready??? They're only 12 bucks or so

    Prep: Shower
    Scuttle: Schwarzweisskeramik
    Brush: Thater 4125/00 2-band Fan
    Razor: Manufrance 6/8" quarter hollow
Soap: Nanny's silly soap company, Grapefruit & Lemongrass
    Aftershave: TOBS No.74 Victorian Lime
Eau de Toilette: Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet

Notes: Speedy shave today - 1 and a half passes, but good enough for near BBS. Finished on a Llynn Idwal + WD40. It seems to work to bring untidy or overhoned edges back into shape. Stropped & shaved.
