I have some gillettes and my favorites among them are the #58 british rocket and #21 british aristocrat. I picked up a Mergress recently to try, but still, my overall favorite DE for quick shaves is the Merkur 38C Barberpole. The size, heft and balance are just what I like. It is not too aggressive, and gives me a quick BBS shave with no weepers or nicks, whether I use it with a red personna or a feather. Both blades give me a close shave, the only difference is the number of hours before I feel stubble.

Gillettes are cool and historical; I like the basic Super Speeds and Techs, especially the 40s types. But my favorite DE at the moment is the Merkur HD.

For a safety razor the Schick injector is my favorite. Nice smooth comfy shave that I prefer to just about anything other than a straight.
For a DE I go from the super comfortable 1940's Super Speed to a Merkur Vision. I like the Vision because I get a great shave if I do it right and the razor is, for me, a lot of fun to use. I need to try some of the other Merkurs as they seem to get universally great reviews.Last edited by Bill S; 11-13-2008 at 04:01 AM.

Merkur Slant for what I missed with the straight after the second pass. I think this DE is the perfect complement to any straight razor. Gives me a genuine BBS every time.
Weishi for my daily head shave. The most gentle DE razor there is. The ideal tool for this particular task.

For me, there are 3 top shavers in my DE world.
1- Merkur Vision
2- Merkur Progress, modified with a metal knob, aka, Mergress
3- 1959 Gillette Fatboy
I normally use Feather blades in all of these razors, but Crystals seem to work almost as good. Since I tend to have a heavier beard, the Derby blades just don't cut it. I mean, they do the job, but I only get maybe 2 shaves with a blade before it is dull. The better blades (Feathers) will last for at least a week of shaves with no problem.
In order, the Vision is the most fun to use, followed by the Mergress, which is just a sweet razor, and the Gillette is a good old standby which gives a comparable shave to either of the other two razors...I'll use it when I'm in a nostalgic DE mood.
...One thing I'm still trying to ponder is Lynn using a DE...I never would have thought it possible.

My favourite is one Merkur Vision with Wilkinson or Birman (small family factory and shop in Basel who sell wonderful sharp and comfortable blades - the man who was making the blades is now dead but they still have a small stock)... I usually use my DE when in a hurry or for touch ups after straight shaving if I need a BBS shave - I still can't achieve a true BBS shave with my straight, as I still have problems to shave ATG
Anyway, a very good razor and a wonderful blade!
