Thanked: 4942Which one do you like best?
Hi guys,
Every now and then I will pull out one of my DE's or Schicks for a quick shave and I have really been leaning toward the Schick lately. I also really like my Merkur razor and my Gillette adjustable. I just can't decide if I really have a favorite or why. All are consistently nice shavers.
What are your favorites and why?
Inquiring minds wanna know..........

My favourites (and by favourites I mean my normal 'go to' ... all that I own are my "favourites), in no particular order:
Undated ball end Tech - mild, manuverable, well balanced, bullet proof
'56 red tip superspeed - heavy, somewhat agressive
70's super adjustable (set on 5) - similar to the red tip, however the head is large which makes it less manuverable.
Merkur HD - this was the one that started me down this crazy shaving path ... how could it not be a fav!

Thanked: 84Wardonia New Edge 'cause they competed with Gillette and were British.
God bless 'em and all who shave with 'em.
Wardonia blades fit Gillette razors but Gillette blades don't fit in Wardonia razors.
They are quite nice DE razors.

Forgot to mention I use a Rolls razor too, but it's really a straight on a stick!Last edited by littlesilverbladefromwale; 11-12-2008 at 04:04 PM.

I have to say I like the current Merkur HD over any of the Gillettes I've had, both regular & adjustable models. I like the Derby blades most, followed by Feather, the drug store no-name blades, and Merkur (in that order!).

If I were to go back to DEs I would prefer the Merkur slant 39C (the long handle) or the Gillette heavy duty rocket known as the HD Rocket. I also love the Barbasol which is also a long handled DE with more weight to cut through the stubborn whiskers.
I like the slant razors for the unique design. Some call it aggressive but I call it efficient. The HD rocket and the Barbasol are also considered by some to be aggressive. I like them for the same reason I like the slant. They deliver the goods. Clean smooth effortless shaves with little or no pressure.
The Gillette like most of them is beautifully made and if you get a good one it operates as smooth as silk. Since I got started with the straights I can't bring myself to shave with a DE.
I only get to shave once a day and I am just so in love with straights right now that the DEs can't compete. That could change I guess but I get way better shaves with the straights so not anytime soon.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 174I used to enjoy an Edwin Jagger (Merkur standard Head but more heavily chromed) with blades referred to as Swedish DE Gillettes.
The razor has a longer handle which for me had a perfect balance in the hand. The Swedish Gillette blade which I think might actually be coming from a Gillette factory in Russia is smoother than the Merkur blade and not scary sharp like the Feather blade. They are not inexpensive, but they are very good.
Not as close as a good straight shave, but still very good.Last edited by English; 11-12-2008 at 06:21 PM.

I agree with English, the Swedes were the best I tried. The Feathers a close second. As sharp but not as smooth. I also liked Derbys, Israeli Personnas and Merkurs.

Thanked: 1903In order of preference:
- Merkur Vision Adjustable Double - Edge Safety Razor: Simply the perfect tool for the job; hefty, yet manoeuvrable; if only it were not so unbelievably ugly.
- Merkur Slant Bar Double - Edge Safety Razor: The next best thing to a straight razor when used improperly; maximum damage with minimal effort; if used properly, arguably the most efficient modern DE.
- Merkur Progress Adjustable Classic Safety Razor: My first DE, and I still like it a lot.
NB, I have only ever used Merkurs.

Thanked: 5Funny you should ask this since I'm currently "testing" my collection to determine the same thing. Thus far, I would have to list these as my favorites:
1) Gillette 1940's Style Super speed
2) Gillette 1930's Silver New and 1933 British New
3) Gillette 1959 Fatboy
I have others that do well, but are lacking in one area or another for my taste.

straights are still number one for me. i have used the gillette superspeed which wasn't bad but i bought a couple gillette slim adjustables that i like. i do have a Schick Injector but am waiting on the blades that a very generous member is sending to me for free, as no stores around me carry injector blades. the gillettes are nice, i think i will eventually buy a Merkur futur or vision but the price is too much right now. my gillette adjustable will probably be my travel razor for now as it is pretty easy to use and versatille. if i had more disposable income i promise i would have many more opinions to give
