Thanked: 4942Which one do you like best?
Hi guys,
Every now and then I will pull out one of my DE's or Schicks for a quick shave and I have really been leaning toward the Schick lately. I also really like my Merkur razor and my Gillette adjustable. I just can't decide if I really have a favorite or why. All are consistently nice shavers.
What are your favorites and why?
Inquiring minds wanna know..........

My favourites (and by favourites I mean my normal 'go to' ... all that I own are my "favourites), in no particular order:
Undated ball end Tech - mild, manuverable, well balanced, bullet proof
'56 red tip superspeed - heavy, somewhat agressive
70's super adjustable (set on 5) - similar to the red tip, however the head is large which makes it less manuverable.
Merkur HD - this was the one that started me down this crazy shaving path ... how could it not be a fav!

Thanked: 84Wardonia New Edge 'cause they competed with Gillette and were British.
God bless 'em and all who shave with 'em.
Wardonia blades fit Gillette razors but Gillette blades don't fit in Wardonia razors.
They are quite nice DE razors.

Forgot to mention I use a Rolls razor too, but it's really a straight on a stick!Last edited by littlesilverbladefromwale; 11-12-2008 at 04:04 PM.

If I were to go back to DEs I would prefer the Merkur slant 39C (the long handle) or the Gillette heavy duty rocket known as the HD Rocket. I also love the Barbasol which is also a long handled DE with more weight to cut through the stubborn whiskers.
I like the slant razors for the unique design. Some call it aggressive but I call it efficient. The HD rocket and the Barbasol are also considered by some to be aggressive. I like them for the same reason I like the slant. They deliver the goods. Clean smooth effortless shaves with little or no pressure.
The Gillette like most of them is beautifully made and if you get a good one it operates as smooth as silk. Since I got started with the straights I can't bring myself to shave with a DE.
I only get to shave once a day and I am just so in love with straights right now that the DEs can't compete. That could change I guess but I get way better shaves with the straights so not anytime soon.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 174I used to enjoy an Edwin Jagger (Merkur standard Head but more heavily chromed) with blades referred to as Swedish DE Gillettes.
The razor has a longer handle which for me had a perfect balance in the hand. The Swedish Gillette blade which I think might actually be coming from a Gillette factory in Russia is smoother than the Merkur blade and not scary sharp like the Feather blade. They are not inexpensive, but they are very good.
Not as close as a good straight shave, but still very good.Last edited by English; 11-12-2008 at 06:21 PM.

I agree with English, the Swedes were the best I tried. The Feathers a close second. As sharp but not as smooth. I also liked Derbys, Israeli Personnas and Merkurs.

My favourite is one Merkur Vision with Wilkinson or Birman (small family factory and shop in Basel who sell wonderful sharp and comfortable blades - the man who was making the blades is now dead but they still have a small stock)... I usually use my DE when in a hurry or for touch ups after straight shaving if I need a BBS shave - I still can't achieve a true BBS shave with my straight, as I still have problems to shave ATG
Anyway, a very good razor and a wonderful blade!

My personal fav's are:
1st: Merkur 180 Long Handle - it has probably the best shaving angle of all my DE's. I even prefer it to my 1950's Gillette Fat Boy Adjustable. I always wind up going back to this razor to clean up anything I have missed with my straights. It is by far the best DE I have ever used.
2nd: 1950's Gillette Super Speed
3rd: 1950's Gillette Fat Boy Adjustable
I only use Derby blades, I find them to be the best balance between price, sharpness and longevity.

I vacillate between telling myself that I will never use a DE again, since I love straights, and taking a day or so every blue moon 'sneaking' one in my rotation for fun or necessity. My current favorite is my 1969 Super Adjustable, gives a splendid shave dialed just right. My goto backup is my 65 SuperSpeed which doesn't give a close enough shave for me unless I do the first pass with a straight. Although I think my Merkur HD is great. There are a few others that I have too but are not on my favorite list. Let me put it this way, if there weren't straights to shave with
I would have no problem using a DE all the time. Oh yeah my favorite blades right now are red personna's.

If I went back to DE razor shaving,my favorite razor would be not a DE,but the Schick Adjustable Injector Razor. The first razor I started out with.2nd choice would be a Gillette slim adjustable.Man I could go thru the whole list.I pretty much love them all, from Eversharp, Gillette,Wilkinson Classic,Persona injector,Pal adj. injector,MERKUR,ETC.The other day I was in a hurry and used my Gillette Super and boy!!, what a shave.I think I'm going to break out all my Oldies and mix it up!!!
I will still stick with str8s too!!
