Thanked: 1184The razor holder turned out to be an old porcelain tooth brush holder :<0)
Oh and buy the way how did that half rattler ever turn out ? Did you buy it, use it, sell it,, make up your mind on it? In other words why did you start this thread in the first place ? Or did you forget already ?
what wagin ?Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Ok seeing as you asked, i am considering getting a razor made, and really quite like the look of this grind, but i know i like the feel of framebacks and full hollows. So i am trying to find out if the look is compatible with the feel that i like.
Bruno said (subsequent to me starting this thread) that they are like framebacks but heavier . From that description i think i woud like it.
I didn't bring it up earlier, as it is a way off probably, and it feels like bragging a bit, which it isnt meant to be, once i have 2 razors that i really like i will be happy. I have one currently, a (faux?) Frameback that was fairly cheaply purchased from our very own carl, so now i just need one more.
Oh and its only a toothbrush holder if you put toothbrushes in it......Bread and water can so easily become tea and toast

Thanked: 1184It sounds like you need to borrow one to test drive. Then add your preferred width and weight to your custom.

Well yes, in an ideal world, well actually in an ideal world whoever loaned it to me would have a range of sizes from 6/8 to 8/8 in 1/16 or less increments
However i doubt that anyone will loan me one let alone 5 or more
I am happy to ake advice from folks who have used them to overcome this though.Bread and water can so easily become tea and toast

Ok folks, after a bit of prodding from phrank i thought i would put up my design so far, let me know what you think might be impractical:
The white one is the latest mock up, the grey one is the original mock up, however see the pic above for the modified tang, if i dont sweep it down i have to have massive, ugly scales
This was the original blade section i drew before i even knew it was a half rattler grind
The most recent incarnation has a 1/4" deep smile, whereas the original had a 1/8" deep smile, i tried a 5/16" but as i suspected it was too much, i am not even sure about the 1/4" but i think aesthetically it is ok, just unsure how it would shave. Originally it was going to have a fairly defined notch, but the curvy point seemed to fit the razor better. I think the tail of the tang should be more upright maybe, more sketching tomorrow.Last edited by edhewitt; 04-05-2014 at 01:34 PM.

Are you going to start cutting metal in that direction? The easy road is rarely rewarding.

I think it looks great...vaguely reminds me of the 9/8 smiling Chopper I showed you, has the nice smile, can see having a tang like that for balance. If you look at that pic again, you can see it has I guess what's called a "monkey tail", a much more pronounced, longer tang. And Valery told me this was for not only aesthetic reasons vis s vis proportions, but also to more properly balance the blade and make for easier handling. I think it's a great starting point, I'm assuming your sending the concept to an custom razor maker, and I'm sure he could help you refine it to the point where it captures the picture you have in your mind of it.
Very exciting process Ed, best of luck getting your project off the ground, will be fascinating to see it progress through the various stages to completion...think you'll end up with quite the beauty!!!
